Richard BELMAN Obituary

BELMAN, Richard I. Richard I. Belman of Rancho Palos Verdes, California and formerly of Willimantic, Connecticut and Key Biscayne, Florida, passed away in Long Beach, California on April 13, 2011. Richard was the son of Abraham Belman and Celia R. (Cohen) Belman Rosow. He grew up in Willimantic, Connecticut and attended Windham High School, graduating from Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Europe. Upon his discharge from military, Richard earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree from the University of Hartford before moving to Miami Beach, Florida where he taught elementary school. In the early 1960's he relocated to Los Angeles, California where he resided for most of the remainder of his life. He did graduate work at the University of California at Los Angeles and was employed as a teacher, counselor and principal in a number of skill and occupational training centers operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District. He returned briefly to Florida to care for his mother in her later years, however, his primary home remained in Rancho Palos Verdes. Richard is survived by his half-brother, James Belman of San Raphael, California; his step-brother, Norman Rosow of Avon, Connecticut; his nephew, Miles Dunn of East Haven, Connecticut; his nieces Nancy Tulin of Berlin, Connecticut and Joanne Hoffman of North Haven, Connecticut; as well as cousins and numerous friends throughout the United States. Beside his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Belman Dunn. Richard's family and friends wish to thank his caregivers who made his final months more comfortable. All arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the "Richard Belman Memorial at Parkinson's Resource Organization" (www.parkinsonresource.org). Richard Belman Memorial Parkinson's Resource Organization 74-478 Hwy 111, #102 Palm Desert, CA 92260.

Richard was truly a friend "for better or for worse"; so many people fortunate he was part of our lives. I will miss his intellect, sense of humor and consistent kindness forever, and try to follow his example in enjoying life to the fullest possible extent.

Richard had a special humor, an outgoing personality and a uniquely caring way about him. . He often thought of others, and seldom, if ever, made an offer on which he was not prepared to follow through. He seemed to be a "list man" who always endeavored to assure everything he committed to was delivered--whether with his work, his family, or his friends. . Richard enjoyed relationships with many long-time friends whom he treasured.

Richard Belman will be missed. He supported a scholarship at Berlin High School for many years and as such, I interacted with him on many occasions. He always made me laugh! Our students have benefited from his generosity, and as his contact at Berlin High, I will miss his sense of humor, and his wonderful caring for others. He will be missed. God Bless
