He was born on February 18, 1933, in Northeast Harbor, ME, son of the late Heslyn L. and Georgia (Hartley) Kelley. Dick was a graduate of Mt. Dick served as president of the Hartford County Home Builders Association where he received many prestigious awards including Builder of the Year and was Vice President and Life Director of the National Home Builders Association. He was inducted into the Rotary Club of South Windsor in 1970, served as District Governor in 1989-1990, received a Paul Harris Award and spent the last 47 years working to provide "Service Above Self" to those in our community. He served on many boards including the SW Republican Town Committee, was an ECHN Foundation Trustee, President of South Windsor Chamber of Commerce, a Deacon at Wapping Community Church and an organizer of the former Bank of South Windsor. Dick was an extremely generous man who enjoyed giving back to the community. Dick enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being at Lord's Point in Stonington. My condolences to the Kelley family on your loss. He was a respected businessman and teacher of great integrity, and he will be exceedingly missed. Dick and my Dad were fellow Rotarians, and he was my Guidance Counselor in high school at SWHS. In addition, Dick participated in the proceedings of the SW Wetlands Commission while I was a member in the early 1990s. I've always appreciated the fact that his work with the Commission was always dignified, honorable, and very knowledgeable. But, more importantly for me, I'll be forever grateful for the counseling he provided me as a naive young high school student. Through his guidance, I ended up attending college in North Carolina 48 years ago. Only recently, at Hal Cummings' funeral, Dick gave me a big, fatherly hug, and revealed something I had never known: "Your Mom was really mad at me for sending you so far away," he said with a smile. Well, I told him that his guidance was likely the most important thing anyone had ever done for me, and that I'd be eternally grateful for it. Not because it brought me so far from home, but because everything in my life since then has been linked to the work he did for me at SWHS. Teachers can have an enormous impact on young people that often goes unrealized and under appreciated. Certainly my story is just one of many significant legacies that Dick leaves behind that may otherwise go unrecognized by others, in a lifetime of innovation, dedication, and service. Sincerely, Jeff Holcombe

Dear Carol, I am so sorry to hear the news and send my condolences to you and the children. It's very hard to believe so much time has passed and I've completely lost track of too many, it seems. I think the last time I saw you and Dick was at Mom & Dad's when they were in Colchester. I remember with great fondness the times we spent together. I'm in Charlotte and assume this is where I'll remain for the duration. Meanwhile, my thoughts and prayers are with you, Kathy, Scott and Bruce, other family members and friends.

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Kelly's passing. He was largely responsible for making the phone call that helped get me into UMaine. I am forever grateful for his efforts. I went on to graduate and teach here in Maine for the past 38 years. I also got my Masters Degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies from the University of Maine at Orono. I have often thought of him making the phone call for me. God bless his family. I know how he touched my life.
