Richard Parker Obituary

Richard E. Parker "Dick", husband of "Jeannie" Thompson Parker and owner of the Little Silver Shop, died on December 13, 2021, from complications of heart disease at the age of 84. He was the son of Edgar and Valma Webber Parker born July 5, 1937, in Hartford, CT. He grew up in Plainville, CT and graduated from Vermont Academy and Tufts University. He served in the Army Reserves and worked as a claims adjuster for Liberty Mutual and detail drug salesman for Upjohn Pharmaceutical covering most of VT. Much to his parents' dismay, he left a "good paying job" to follow a hobby he loved. Soon Dick opened the Little Silver Shop in a former one-car garage in Old Avon Village and became the smallest anchor tenant of any shopping mall. He liked being his own boss and was happy creating gold and silver jewelry for his loyal customers the past 60 years. His button bracelets became a tradition in many families in the Farmington Valley and across the country and were sometimes spotted on the wrists of tourists and residents around the world. If you wore one, you immediately knew where it came from. Old curmudgeon that he was, he did get a kick out of being referred to as "the Mayor of Old Avon Village" with his own designated parking space as his was the oldest business in that location. Dick spent his free time boating, playing duplicate bridge, using his private pilot's license and putting miles on his lawn tractor. He often recalled great memories of his youth at Leete's Island in Guilford, CT. In later years he again enjoyed Leete's Island and Lake Bomoseen, VT. Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeannie, his sons, Thomas, Robert and his fiancée Jessie, her children, Julie and Douglas, his brother-in-law, Douglas Thompson and cousins JoAn, Nancy, Scott, Sally, Gwen, Denny and Marabeth. Companions and Homemakers and the staff at Avon Health Center and McLean Hospice provided exceptional care. We appreciate the dedication of assistant silversmith, Chris Mathein and salesperson, Ingrid Glasson who held down the fort at the store through the pandemic. A shout out is due Richard's other assistant craftsmen through the years, son Tom Parker, Douglas Thompson, Tom Dexter plus long-time employees Gretchen, Elin, Ann, Rita, Valerie, Jessica, Alison and a host of full-time and part-time sales girls. The unwavering support of the Gondek angels, Brian C. and Harry W, brought him good cheer. Dick's family will receive friends Monday, December 20, 2021, from 5-6 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 6 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Rd., Avon, CT. A reception will follow the service at Carmon's. Please wear masks during all the services. Memorial donations may be made to the the West Avon Cemetery Association, 712 West Avon Road, Avon, CT 06001 or to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492. I have such fond childhood memories of our shared neighborhood on West Avon Road. I distinctly remember when the Parkers' built their home on Brickyard Road. I share in the tradition (and then status symbol) of owning a Button Bracelet, as now does our granddaughter. Once when visiting an acquaintance in Montana while wearing my Button Bracelet, the hostess remarked, "Oh, is that a Button Bracelet from the Little Silver Shop in Avon?" She had lived in Simsbury. That little Silver Shop's fame had spread far and wide! Dick's skill with jewelry design was a much appreciated gift. Don & I extend our deepest sympathies to you Jeannie and your entire family.

To the Parker family,
I am sorry to read of Mr. Parker's passing. I owned a salon in Old Avon Village in the 70's and would go and shop between client appointments. I still have so many unusual pieces of his and still wear and get compliments when I do. He was one of a kind as were his creations.
My sympathy to you all.

Dear Mrs. Parker,

I am so very sorry to read about Mr. Parker. I honestly have lost count of the amount of jewelry I have from his small shop. I think I started shopping there when I was still in elementary school and you were my gym teacher. He was amazing. My mom was Tommy´s teacher-aide at Wee Wigglers. You all were a part of my life. My very deepest sympathy to you all. I´m sure all the angels will be wearing silver. Love, Ginnie (McGivern) Greene.

I have so many memories of Dick...from when he would babysit his 5 cousins when we were kids in the 50's, to working at the shop in high school and getting paid in jewelry (what more could you ask for as a 15 year old girl), to stopping at the store during every visit I made to Avon. He was a true constant in my life and I will miss him so much. My love and sympathy to Jeannie, Tom and Rob.

He was a legend. I remember going to the store with my mom and he would come out. I have several of his pieces including the button bracelet. I actually just bought myself a new one for my birthday as the old one is lost. Prayers and love to the family.

Dear Jeannie and Family, So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Yes indeed the Little Silver Shop was always the place to go for just the right beautiful creation. I'm wearing my Button Bracelet right now as I do most days. Simple but elegant and I always get compliments and inquiries where I got it. So many memories. We Avon Town Folk need to keep those memories alive. Hoping that your memories comfort you. Always. Bonnie

I am so sorry for your loss. I purchased my first silver button bracelet with babysitting money back in the 60´s. Since then I have purchased many more and other styles as well for myself and friends. Yes he could be a bit grumpy answering questions from the back but he was always kind when he waited on you.

I have so many wonderful memories of this "famously cranky man". I still wear the button bracelet that I received on my 16th birthday! In 1980 I gave all of my bridesmaids the "turn" pendant on a chain. In more recent times I fell in love with a necklace which was too small for my neck. After two visits to the shop by my husband and a cheesecake Mr Parker finally agreed to alter it for me! He was one of a kind and his beautiful silver art marked many a milestone in my life!
