Richard Wilkins Obituary

Richard Spaulding Wilkins, 85, of Lyme, passed away at his home on August 12, in the presence of his family. Born on August 18, 1928 in Newton Mass., to C. Howard Wilkins and Bertha M. Given Wilkins. He grew up in Newton Mass, completing his early education at Newton schools and Tilton academy. Summers were spent at camp Wyanoke on Lake Winnipesaukee, N.H., as a camper and later as a counselor. Dick received a mechanical engineering degree from Norwich University, VT. He excelled at sports, participating for three years as a member of the track team, and four years on the ice hockey team, serving as co-captain and team captain. Often a leading scorer for his hockey team, he was later inducted into the universities Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. Upon graduation he received his commission in the army followed by two years of service. Employed as a mechanical engineer for over thirty years, he retired from General Dynamics Electric Boat Division. Richards pursuit of excellence was unwavering and apparent in his engineering career, as he achieved several patents and advanced throughout his career. Post retirement he was sought out as a consultant, on several occasions working overseas. Richards interest and talents in mechanical engineering were apparent throughout his life and reflected in the hobbies he pursued. His fascination with aircraft and flying started as a young boy when he began building and flying models. Dick pursued his passion throughout his life, becoming a dedicated member of the R.C. Prop Busters and the A.M.A. He built, designed and flew numerous model planes. He promoted and organized many club flying events, demonstrations and R.C. air shows. Dick shared his enthusiasm for R.C. flying mentoring many new and inexperienced R.C. flyers. Designing and building a home was one of his most enjoyable retirement projects. During his retirement years he also volunteered his time and skills to Bikes for Kids and continued to actively participate in building and flying R.C. models. Richard enjoyed many years of retirement at his lakeside home. He appreciated the community of Lyme, close neighbors and wonderful friends. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and UConn Woman's Basketball team. He adopted Airedale terriers and greatly enjoyed their company. Dick was predeceased by his brother John Wilkins. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Marilyn McClernon Wilkins, daughter Susan Wilkins Simpson of San Diego, son Kenneth C. Wilkins and grandchildren Shoni and Cody Wilkins, nephews Douglas Wilkins and Family, Sean Scott and nieces Cynthia Wilkins, Anne Morton August, Marcia Morton Sudlow, Shannon Scott and sisters in-laws Jean Wilkins, Lois Scott and husband Robert. A celebration of Richards life will be held at a future date for family and friends. The family give thanks to the wonderful support and care provided by Middlesex Hospice. Sorry to read of Dick's passing. I too learned from this good man. He helped me the first time I flew my own model plane at Salem. I worked with Dick at EB in the early 80's where his words of wisdom taught me something valuable when he said "they aren't going to pin any medals on you here for saving weight". While that's contrary to building model airplanes it's so true in the submarine business. Rest in peace.

So sorry for your loss Marilyn. I enjoyed coming over your house, and building a banner to tow with my plane. Dick taught me the ins and outs of towing with a model plane, and an experience I will never forget. Rest in peace Dick.
