Robert Gatzen Obituary

Robert Alan Gatzen, 74, of Newington, beloved husband of the late Joann Carter, passed peacefully at home on Friday, December 29, 2023, after living nine years with Alzheimer's disease. He passed away with his long-term caregiver by his side. Bob and Joann were married in 1970 and she passed away in 2016. Besides his wife, Bob was predeceased by his parents, Anne and Herman, and his oldest brother, Gary. He is survived by his brother, Bernie, sisters-in-law, Pat Gatzen, Betty Gatzen, Irma Carter, several nieces and nephews and many life-long friends.

Bob was born on March 23, 1949, and lived in West Hartford. He graduated from Conard High School in 1967. He started playing drums while a young teenager and his competency became apparent as he and four friends at Conard started the band named The Wanderers. They were well known in that era and that catapulted his life into a very successful career in percussion music. Bob studied at the Hartt School of Music and as his career progressed, he made the decision not to be a touring professional. He opened his Creative Music percussion store in Wethersfield and grew it into the premier percussion shop in CT. The name of the store personified Bob as he was and still is considered a leader and creator with his instrument. He retired from the business life and dedicated himself to other percussion interests. He worked out of his home studio, conducting R&D for multiple companies. He took his ideas to the invention level and holds patents for designs of drums and drum components, sticks, cymbals, and pedals. He invented and engineered the Drum Frame, a unique system to mount a drum set and seat. He was also known for his drum tuning techniques which he shared with the industry via a released set of videos. He initiated the education START program with presentations and performances in schools throughout CT. His desire was to instill in students the ability to innovate in whatever field they pursue, just as he had done in the music field.

Bob and Joann were devoted dog owners. They started with two Old English Sheepdogs and later in life moved to two Tibetan Terriers. They were active in training and showing their beloved pets in local competitions. They were also Disney lovers and they visited Disney World several times each year and always enjoyed it as a dynamic entertainment venue.

Bob's funeral will be handled by the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. He will be interred in a private ceremony at West Meadow Cemetery in Newington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, CT Chapter, 200 Executive Boulevard, Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489 or to an organization of the donor's choice. He built my drumframe for me. I have a prosthetic limb from a job related injury and Bob built me a drumframe so I could overcome that. I miss him terribly. John Porth

Besides all his drummerly gifts and the gifts he gave drummers, I will remember Bob as an original thinker. I remember when he presented at a vintage drum show. He started by confessing he was not a vintage drum guy and offered to speak to the audience about any number of topics from tuning to creativity. They opted for tuning, but I would have liked to hear about creativity because I think a lot about how to foster it. I cornered him afterwards and he shared some insights with me, though he barely scratched the surface of his knowledge. But that was Bob, always willing to engage someone and share his wisdom.

Truly one of a kind. I miss Creative Music and I'll miss this creative musician. On top of all his accomplishments in percussion, I appreciated his mission to foster creativity and expand human potential.

Connie and I are saddened by Bob´s passing but at the same time relieved that he is finally at peace and back with Joanne.
Bob captured my attention and spirit with his masterful drumming, and helped me to get going in my career in drumming back in Jr High School, and our relationship continued and my involvement in drumming continues until today. Thanks Bob for exposing me to drumming and the life it has given me for nearly 60 years.

I´ll always have fond memories of Bob & JoAnn coming over and spending New Years Eve with my parents and my brother and I, throughout my childhood. I remember Bob always being so cool but always so kind and easy to talk to. JoAnn always had a sparkle in her eye and a big smile. They were like extended family to us and best friends to my parents, Marty & Joyce Roy, since High School. Bob will surely be missed, but he and JoAnn will always be preserved i. our memories.

Bob will be sorely missed. I cherished our years together teaching young adults about Jazz and the clinics run by Gary Burton and many of his fellow jazz stars at Creative Music Studio in Wethersfield, Ct. I hope there are many more Bob Gatzens out there for us.

Bob was such a wonderful mentor to my husband, George Edwards (who has also passed). We always enjoyed our visits to the music store even if it was just to say hello. I'm sure he will be missed by all who knew him. I know he and George will collaborate on something in the heavens. Rest in peace, Bob.
With deepest sympathy, Chris Edwards

I knew Bobby when he was the drummer for The Wanderers. Having started The West Hartford Youth Council in 1965, Bob's band was always one of our biggest draws with hundreds of kids coming our to listen and dance to their excellent music. Bob was always easy to get along with and although I'm very sorry to hear of his disease, it sounds as if he found commercial success with his store and inventions. Keep on drumming, Bobby.

Dearest Pat, Bernie and family,
What an accomplished and beloved son, husband, brother, uncle and friend! Bob was a classmate of mine at Conard and although he probably had no idea who I was, I definitely knew of his accomplishments. He followed his passion and dreams and made those his life's work. I received several emails today from fellow classmates who are mourning his tragic loss. Please know that Joe and I send our sincere condolences to your family.
In loving support and friendship,
Carol Waxman

Bob was a mentor, an influencer, an inspiration, and a genius. We spent a great deal of time together, mixing, recording, and creating. Bobby had huge impact on my life, he taught me that my potential was limitless. Bob was in my thoughts today even before I received this news. I wont forget our last visit together. RIP

Very sorry to hear this. Bob and Joanne always treated me like family but I'm pretty sure they treated everybody like that. Heck they even hired me to teach at Creative and even came to my wedding. At least they'll be together now and Bob won't be suffering anymore. Thank you so much for all the years at Creative and for all your knowledge. See you on the other side my friend
