Robert LONG Obituary

LONG, Dr. Robert Edward Dr. Robert E. Long, 69, died on Tuesday (April 27, 2010) at his Hartford home of 32 years, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boston on November 21, 1940, Bob attended Boston State (B.S.), Boston College (M.S.), and Columbia University (Ed.D., Federal Fellow). Retired in 2001 as an educator of the visually impaired, most recently in the Hartford Public Schools, Bob also worked as Chief of Children's Svcs., BESB; and for The Lighthouse (NYC); Amer. Fed. for the Blind; Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind; and taught at Jersey City St. Coll., U. of Colorado, and Hunter College. He belonged to several professional organizations. Bob served for three years on the Hartford Bd. of Ed., and was a board member for the Hartford Public Library. As a Third Age Initiative, L.G.H., participant, he helped found "Readers as Leaders." Most recently, he served as a hospice volunteer. He founded and coached the Hartford Public H.S. crew, presided over the Noah Webster PTA, the HPHS PTSO, and HPHS governance board. Bob coached chess, soccer, and football. Bob was a foster parent and "Dad" to many youth who sat around our table, regaled with storytelling, political and social justice discussion, and wit, or who joined us for biking, sailing or hiking trips. Bob created some of our richest family bonds during several U.S. camping trips. Bob was an avid reader, wood and stone carver and sailor; he delighted many with his harmonica playing. As a life-long advocate for social justice, he marched on Washington with Martin Luther King, was an antiwar activist as a grad student and student govt. president at Columbia, and recently as a JP, performed many same-sex marriages. He is survived by "the love of my life for 35 years," his wife, Gloria Gruber Long, and his six children: Julie Misenti and her husband Nicholas, Jennifer Long and her wife Amy Ojerholm, Robert E. Long, Jr. and his wife Skye, Justin Long and his wife Ariana Silverman, Colman Long and his wife Elsie Vazquez-Long, and Gannon Long; and his grandchildren: Kali Edwards and her husband Jeremy, and Zachary, Travis, and Forrest Misenti; and sisters: Nancy Seglin and her husband Jeffrey, Jeanne Berrigan, and his sister-in-law, Sachiko Long. He is also survived by several loving nephews and nieces, grand nieces and nephews, sisters- and brothers-in-law and cousins. He is pre-deceased by his daughter, Ceya, mother, Catherine, father, Edward, brother, Edward, Jr., and brother-in-law, William Berrigan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday (May 8, 2010) from 11-12:30 p.m., followed by visiting until 2 p.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. I was deeply sorry to read of Bob's passing in Sunday's papers. Bob was an extraordinary person. I met Bob while I working at Webster School and due of his warmth and because he always "kept it real," we developed a friendship and would talk whenever we met at 249 High Street. It's been years, but there are folks you don't forget.

I am so sorry to hear of your family's loss. I will always be grateful to Bob for creating a rowing program in that most unlikely of places, Hartford High. I have fond memories of piling into his Volvo station wagon and heading down to the river each afternoon after school. The crew team was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult four years. Now, rowing competitively here in the UK, I have Bob to thank for providing me with the opportunity to do something I would never have thought was open to me. Bob was a kind, gentle man and a very patient and dedicated coach. My thoughts are with all of you.

I deeply regret the passing of my friend Bob Long. Bob and I worked very closely together along with our team on the project called Readers As Leaders. We had a great deal of respect for each other and mutually enjoyed the comradeship of working this project. He will be sorely missed by me and I dare say our other team members as well. Rest at peace Bob. My heart goes out to the family.

Dear Gloria and Family,
Bob helped me when I got out of BC. He would give me a ride to the Guild (Carroll Center)while I was getting on my feet in mobility. Of greater value the commute was the mentoring and the sharing of his experience that made breaking into the field easier. That was the way Bob always lived his life. I am saddened at his passing. My prayers are with you.

Dear Long family,
Bob was truly one of a kind and a champion for all of the children in Hartford. As a fellow educator, I was blessed to work with Bob for many years in Hartford. As a fellow sailor, I enjoyed sailing the "yellow banana" with Bob and telling tales of the sea.
My deepest sympathy to the Long family.

Gannon, Colman, and Justin, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. He was such an omnipresence at HPHS that it's hard to imagine walking the hallways there without running into him. His spirit there and in Hartford will remain in all the lives he touched.

I will always remember Bob as a gentle light radiating out to anyone and everyone, all inclusive, "no holds barred". I have rarely met a person who had such a gift of immediate heart connection as Bob had. He also somehow made the heaviest burdens lighter, and such an ability to bring forth a smile, even into the saddest places! His nature simply drew out the strengths, and the gifts of others. I know now that the circle of his light went to places farther than our human eyes can see. I have no doubt that his spirit will live powerfully on in those of us who were blessed to know him.

Thank you for all you did for us HPHS kids. I will always remember you as a kind and gentle man - you did not yell when I crashed the shell into the dock. I hope you knew how much you affected the lives of the kids that were welcomed into your presence and home. Rest in Peace.

As a hospice spiritual care volunteer, Bob touched those in his care in the deepest, most spiritual way. He will remain in the hearts and memories of countless people who were comforted by his wisdom and presence, including myself. I will always hold him in a very special place in my heart. He made a profound difference in his world. My thoughts and heart are with you Gloria and family.
