Robert L. Porter, 93, of Canton, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2023. Bob will be remembered for his kindness, his intelligence, his love of music, and his devotion to his wife Constance.
Born December 18, 1929, Bob grew up in
New Rochelle, NY. Bob earned his Bachelors at Wesleyan and his Masters from the Columbia School of Engineering. He also served two years in the Army. While interning in Worcester, he met his future wife Constance Flower, marrying her in July, 1956. Bob worked for 12 years at Dunlap and Associates in Stamford. He joined Travelers Insurance Management Company in 1968 and moved with his wife and three daughters to Canton. He retired as a Vice President of Investment Management in 1993.
Bob and Connie joined the North Canton Community United Methodist Church in 1969, where he sang in the choir and served on the Finance Board. After retirement he joined the Farmington Valley Chorale, singing for 25 years. He volunteered with the Canton Land Trust and Town of Canton, helping seniors complete their tax returns. Bob was happiest either singing or listening to music, or studying a problem to arrive at the best solution. He loved reading, cooking, swimming, and golf. His interest in understanding systems, whether mechanical, musical, or human, provided him with abundant fascination throughout his life and gave him a wealth of knowledge. Before Google, there was Bob.
Predeceased by his oldest daughter Katherine Kellogg Porter in 2013, his brother Charles (Barry) and sister-in-law Betty Porter, Bob is survived by his loving wife and sweetheart of 66 years Constance Flower Porter, his daughters Martha Porter and Sarah Porter, son-in-law Matthew Bernstein, and grandsons Asa and Otto Porter-Bernstein. The family is grateful for the kind care given by caregivers from Home Helpers, Inc.
