Our lives were forever changed March 9, 2025 when we tragically lost our son Daniel J. Callahan, 26, who died after an accident in the Connecticut River. He brought joy to friends and family through his singing and guitar playing, his sharp wit, and brilliant mind. Daniel is profoundly missed by all who love him, and his family and friends continue to hold hope in their hearts while honoring his memory each day. Daniel Joseph Callahan was born in Hartford, CT on May 6, 1998. He grew up in Enfield, CT and West Springfield, MA and more recently lived in Broad Brook, CT with his father and his beloved cat Cleopatra. He graduated from West Springfield High School in 2016, and in 2020 he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in History, with a Minor in Classical Civilization and a Certificate in Medieval Studies from the University of Massachusetts. Daniel worked alongside his father in the family business, but music was always a central part of his life. The first concert he attended at the age of 8 was The Allman Brothers Band and he was awe struck when he got to meet Warren Haynes at the Orpheum Theater in Boston in 2017. His favorite thing was experiencing live shows, that was his happy place, and he attended as many as he could with his father and brother Joseph. Music wasn't just something he liked-it was how he lived. He had a beautiful voice, wrote haunting lyrics, and loved playing guitar with his bandmates, especially his friend Donovan. Daniel is survived by his father, James Callahan; his mother, Jana (Russell) Seiler, and his stepfather, Alex; his best friend and brother, Joseph Callahan, and fiancée Olivia; his favorite person-his sister, Madison Seiler, who is following in his musical footsteps; his maternal grandmother, June (Pinto) Smeltz, her husband Richard (Pop); his Uncle Jim Russell and fiancée Beth; Aunts Teresa Callahan, Diana Callahan, Patricia Callahan and several loving cousins, who were like siblings to him; and his devoted stepfamily. He joins his beloved grandparents, James Russell, and Edwin and Carmela (Cavallaro) Callahan, and his uncle John Callahan, who passed before him. A celebration of Daniel's life will be held at the Curran-Jones Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, West Springfield, MA on Saturday, March 28th. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., and a service will be held at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that those attending come in casual attire. Donations in Daniel's memory may be made to the Dakin Humane Society and the West Springfield Boys and Girls Club. Daniel will be remembered for his passion for music, his genuine warmth, his sharp intellect, and the unwavering love he shared with his family and friends.
