Ron Spiers was the director of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the State Department when I joined the department in the late 1970s. I remember him as a decent, intelligent man with great integrity. RIP.

Dear Deb, Martha, Sally and Peter,
I met your father about ten years ago at my first "Thursday Group Discussion of Current Events" meeting at RiverWoods Exeter. The topic was about Israel and Palestine. Someone in the group, of about ten people, asked your Dad for his opinion and he quietly replied, "Well, the last time I spoke with Netanyahu..." The rest of what he said I didn't register because I was picking up my jaw from the table top. When I got back to our cottage and my husband Frank, I told him that this was going to be a stimulating group and I better get my hands on every bit of news I could!
Ron was a gentleman, the kind of diplomate we hoped that the United States of America had around the world. I learned a great deal about the Middle East from his lectures and by our conversations.
I am so sorry that his final years were so painful for all of us to watch. I still miss your Mom, Patience and your Dad will be missed too.
