Susan Alter Obituary

Susan Kane Alter passed away in her sleep on August 28, 2014. She was born December 18, 1941, and grew up in West Hartford, CT. Susan attended Cornell University and The University of Hartford, it was during her junior year that she was fixed up on a blind date with Dr. Elliott Alter, a young optometrist who was setting up a practice in town. It was not long until the two were married on September 1, 1962. They were the loves of each other's lives. An avid reader and wonderful writer, Susan began her career teaching English at Newington High School. When she couldn't find pants to fit her six foot frame, she decided to open a clothing store, named artichoke, inc,. after her favorite vegetable. For over 40 years she clothed the most fahionable women in the Hartford area. She and Elliott traveled the world but she was never happier than in her home town store. Usually dressed in her favorite Armani suit, and red lipstick, she took pride in being fashion's final say. The world is a bit dimmer (and surely less well-dressed) without her. Susan always had a full dance card, making friends easily and entertaining often. Her Miss America parties were legendary as were the Alter's New Years Eve cocktail parties. She was always the life of the party, witty and gracious and always laughing. Susan is survived by her devoted husband Elliott, and her children, Catherine and her husband Karl, and David and his wife Abby. She was a loving grandmother to Sophie, Jozie and Leo. She was the beloved daughter of Joseph and Lillian Kane and a caring sister to Hava Kane Dunn. The family is greatful for the care she received by all the staff, while residing at Two South of the Hebrew Home and Hospital. Her life will be celebrated on Sunday August 31, 12:30PM at the Beth El Cemetery, 51 Jackson Street, Avon, CT. Following the burial, the family will receive visitors at 10 Shady Lane, West Hartford, CT; until 7PM on Sunday and from 1PM to 6PM on Monday September 1. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

The years have passed since Susan died, yet I think of her often. She was a true friend who helped me through some hard times. Moreover, we shared many a laugh. She told me that as long as you, remember someone who has died they will live on.

This weekend is Hall High School's 55th reunion, and on the website I read of Susan's death and immediately teared up although we have not been friends for more than 50 years. We grew up around the corner from each other, and my last memory is of Susan and me sitting on the floor of her room listening to Frank Sinatra whom she loved. I'm so glad she had a happy life filled with love of family and friends, that she met her goals and enjoyed the goodness life offers which sadly was all taken too early. My condolences to the family.

I owe everything I am today to this stunning, giving, gracious woman, who, with Elliott, opened her home and heart to me - and never stopped. She will be sorely missed by family and her hundreds of friends.
