Susan DeVanna Obituary

Susan Mary DeVanna, 61 formerly of Pittsfield MA and East Granby, CT passed away from COVID -19 on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at UCONN Health Center. Susie was the daughter of the late Nunzio DeVanna and Louise (Rathbun) DeVanna of Simsbury. Society and Down Syndrome placed many barriers in her way, but her loving mother guided her on the path to success. She graduated from Windsor Locks High School and began a forty-year journey with FAVARH. Susie had an innate sense of humor and could expertly read human emotion. She worked many years at grocery stores in the Farmington Valley, making new friends, and generating smiles. Susie was a dancer, bowler, tickler, and a flirt, always asking "Are you married?" She was pleasantly mischievous and enjoyed inserting controversy into dinner time conversation. For Susie, life was about good food and dessert, especially chocolate cake and coffee. Besides her mother Louise, she leaves a devoted sister Nancy Miller and her husband Keith of Hilton Head, SC; a brother Paul DeVanna of Marlborough; nephew Thomas Miller; and two nieces; K. Zhizhou Miller and Isabelle DeVanna, and her many cousins. The family is grateful for the years of love and compassion Susie received from her many caregivers at FAVARH, especially at her Parkview home: Maria Manning, Michelle, Sherice, Marianne, Shellie, Nashika, Kathy, Melissa, and Katie. The family thanks Dr. Roy Zagieboylo, Dr. Jamie Haber, Melissa Scavetta APRN, Bob Sperry from DDS and the UCONN Health care team. A celebration of Susan's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FAVARH, 225 Commerce Drive, Canton, CT 06019 or FAVARH.org. The Carmon Funeral Home in Avon is handling arrangements. I worked with Susie many years ago when she resided in Burlington. She had a unique sense of humor and often brought me to my knees with uncontrollable laughter. The most memorable and debatable times were at the Avon High School Track. We shared the same feelings about walking in circles, I however had to mask my opinions. Susie always wanted to hang onto my arm, the more we walked, the more I seemed to be pulling her along. I certainly got my exercise in! The whole way she was quietly giggling and leaning/hanging.

At the end we had to climb up a steep hill to the van. One night, Susie started falling backwards towards me. I instinctively pushed her forward, this surprised her and she ended up on all fours. We both completely lost it! The rest of the way consisted of her telling me to help push her as we each crawled to the top. I couldn’t bring myself to look down at the many, many people who were still getting their evening workout in.

Over the years, I have thought of Susie often and have shared this story many times. I still laugh just as hard as I did back then. This is how I will always remember her! Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Haha - Susie lived for desserts - (like me!) We loved your (Nancy’s) chocolate brownies and that pecan chocolate tart! And yes - she was a total flirt! Such a fun loving sweet gal. She will be greatly missed. Louise, you were the epitome of a wonderful loving supportive mother, always. Nancy - the best sis a gal could have-always there at the ready to advocate on every issue on Susie’s behalf. No regrets or second thoughts about how awesome and supportive you both were. May she Rest In Peace- all who knew her will remember that smile.
