Suzanne Nolan Obituary

Suzanne Nolan of Windsor died peacefully on February 21 after a brief illness. She was born on January, 25, 1951 in Hartford to the late Dr. John O'Leary and Elizabeth Blanchard Nolan, longtime residents of West Hartford.

Suzanne was a graduate of The Chaffee School and Brown University where she played varsity ice hockey and made history in 1973: she was a senior orator at the University Commencement, the first time both orators were women. In 1982, she earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from The University of St. Joseph in West Hartford.

For almost a decade, Suzanne taught English and coached female athletes at Connecticut secondary schools. Her career aspirations evolved in these years, leading her to nonprofit work at Covenant House in New York and H.O.M.E. in Maine. Later, she explored Hospital Ministry, an expanding discipline that combined her faith, natural gifts for connecting with people and her commitment to offering compassionate care and counsel to patients and families, often in the most difficult moments of their lives.

From 1990 to 1996, Suzanne worked as a Pastoral Associate on Saint Bridget's Church Collaborative Pastoral Team in Manchester. She then served as a Chaplain at Manchester Memorial Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Springfield. In 2007, she was named Director of Pastoral Care at Saint Francis Hospital. An inspired leader, Suzanne was instrumental in developing and implementing a Certified Pastoral Education program and a one-year Resident program for Chaplains.

After retirement, Suzanne continued her longtime participation as a Mercy Associate, men and women who make a covenant of service with the Sisters of Mercy to live Mercy in their lives. She expanded her active engagement with St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church in Hartford, which she cherished for its unwavering commitment to building and supporting the diverse Parish community. She also found more time to devote to her many interests, including golf, sailing and gardening.

Suzanne is survived by her beloved husband Christopher Wagner with whom she shared a loving marriage and many adventures, particularly sailing the Cape Cod waters off Provincetown and Buzzards Bay; her brothers, John of West Hartford and David (Carol) of Mashpee, MA. She is also survived by a large and loving family, including sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Friends are invited to calling hours at The Ahern Funeral Home, 180 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, on Friday, February 24, 4:00-6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford, on Saturday, February 25, at 11 a.m. The Service will be Live Streamed at spsact.org.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Suzanne's memory may be made to The Transplant Patient Care Unit, Office of Development, Yale New Haven Hospital, PO Box 1849, 20 York Street, New Haven, CT 06510.

Suzanne has been very much on my mind as the anniversary of her death approached. I first met Suzanne at ski camp in New Hampshire and then spent our high school years with her at the Chaffee School.
Suzanne was smart, athletic, funny, mischievous and always a good friend. At that time,I didn´t realize how spiritual she was. This became quietly obvious over time.
About ten years ago, Suzanne, Amy (another Chaffee classmate) and I started getting together, sometimes sitting along the Farmington River across from the old Chaffee School building, by Bart´s. I so cherish memories of of these lunches. We shared everything, our pasts and our presents, our political concerns. So much laughter! As I navigate a very difficult time with my husband, who is very sick, I think of Suzanne sitting beside me, giving me comfort. I do so miss her.

Our heart-felt condolences to all who were fortunate enough to know Suzanne. Though we did not know her well, every time we met we were impressed by her strength and her religious convictions. She was warm and kind and had a great sense of humor. She had to, being married to Chris. Hang in there. Love you bud. - Mac

Suzanne ran Spiritual Care Dept. at St. Francis Hospital, during my first unit of clinical pastoral education and while a Muslim student at Hartford Seminary. In post-9/11, I felt a uneasy caring for patients who mostly identified as Christian. Enter Suzanne. This compassionate woman of God came alongside me. She supported and encouraged me to be the presence within the Presence, a conduit of God´s Love for everyone. She made all the difference in the world to this fledgling chaplain. I hold Suzanne close to my heart and pray her loved ones be comforted and find ease in the fact that Suzanne ran the good race in service to countless folks in need, including me. Well done good and faithful servant. See you on the other side, God willing.

I had the privilege of working with Suzanne at Manchester Memorial Hospital when I was a nurse discharge planner there.
Her empathy and kindness were so evident and patients loved her.Her colleagues did as well! Our paths crossed later on at St.Patrick -St.Anthony Church in Hartford.I will always remember her great smile and laugh!
Her loss to all who knew her is a great one.

I doubt Suzanne ever knew how much her kindness to me - a scared freshman hockey goalie - meant. Where most upperclassmen were polite but fairly oblivious, Suzanne took the time to talk to me - not just on the ice (especially after goals against! Ouch), but on the bus to Canada, and in the locker room, and even out on campus. I'll never forget her wide smile, her positive aura (even in the midst of some truly terrible team performances in those early days!), and how much her presence meant to me and all the underclassmen on the Pandas. Ever true, Suzanne; I'll never forget you.

I will remember "Aunt Sue" for the twinkle in her eye, her love of mischief, and her love for her 3 nieces who adored her right back. Like all Nolan women, she was smart, intuitive, and real. I feel lucky to have known her and I know how much she will be missed. Sending my love to you all.

Suzanne was the most amazing spiritual care director, and mentor. I was a resident chaplain at St. Francis in 2014-15, and every day I was guided and strengthened by Suzanne's brilliance, competency, leadership and deep faith. I am a trauma chaplain at Hartford Hospital today, because of the education and spiritual inspirations I received from Suzanne. She was a treasure, and will remain in my heart (& ministry) always.... I am saddened to read of Suzanne's passing. We had lost touch over the years, but I am not surprised by her devotion to pastoral work. In 1981, she and I took a well remembered bike/camping trip from Woodstock VT to St Johnsbury to visit a work colleague. And she along with 2 other work friends participated in the Josh Billings "runaground." Suzanne biked her leg, One other did the run, and I and the fourth friend paddled around the Stockbridge Bowl. The picture below says it all. Rest in peace good friend.

My deepest condolences to your family. Suzanne, Father Donnelly and Sister Joan were the Pastoral team at St Bridget's when my Mom passed away. They were with us holding hands and praying at the hospital. They were our rock that day and we are forever blessed. May you rest in peace Suzanne and fly with angels.

Suzanne was a merciful and passionate woman. Her guidance with the core of Mercy was always a joy to hear as well as a delight to pray with. And now I will add her to my guardian "cardinal" connection. My prayers are with her family and the Mercy community.

Suzanne, You will be missed as part of the Wagner Family. We had so many common factors among us. One was the Love of the Family that we married into and the awesome lead of the family which was John & Gert. We both loved them dearly and enjoyed our times with them. Suzanne you were such an inspiration to me when I was sick with my own diagnosis and your sharing of my future with acceptance. I am so sorry that you had this trail to pass but I have no doubt you had the love of grace and acceptance within you. No matter what was going on in your life you always were full of love and acceptance which I always respected/love. I am so sorry that someone with your love and acceptance had to go through this and you will be a continued example for me of what is expected for me with true belief. We will all miss you SueZue (Mrs. BigHead) and looking forward to seeing you again. You were the best SisterNLaw that one could ask for. Love You. We will keep our eyes open on Chris aka Mr. Big Head. Love you Suzanne.

Suzanne was a dedicated, caring, and empathic spiritual director. Her energy was palpable! When Suzanne was in the room, all was well, and we all felt loved, nurtured, and supported. She will be missed by all of us. Lisa Hudkins, Spiritual Life Center, West Hartford

As a critical care RN for 47 years at St Francis Hospital, I was lucky enough to have interacted with Suzanne Nolan during my years in the MSICU. She was so easy to talk with and she was able to relate to critically ill patients and their families at a very intimate level during some of the most difficult times of their lives. May she rest in peace after a life well-lived
