Thomas Elliott Obituary

Thomas (Salt) Osgood Elliott, Tom, died unexpectedly on July 6th, 2019 in Birmingham, AL at the age of 50. Tom is survived by his father, David Elliott of Collinsville, CT and his siblings, Lisa Elliott of Folly Beach, SC and Chris Ormond of Mooresville, NC. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Christian Ormond and nieces Caitlin Ormond and Emily Ormond. He is preceded in death by his mother Kathleen Green Elliott of Collinsville, CT. Tom was born on August 18, 1968 in Norwalk, CT to David and Kathleen Elliott. He graduated from Canton High School in 1986 where he was 3-season scholar athlete and the co-captain of the State Champion Soccer and Baseball teams and a member of the basketball team. He was also the best Danny Zuko ever in the school play of "Grease." He went on to graduate from UMASS Amherst in 1991 with a major in Hotel Restaurant and Travel Administration. After a short tenure with the Marriott Corporation he joined the University of Connecticut as the Director of Building Services at the Health Center in Farmington. He was promoted to the Director of Building and Grounds at the main campus in Storrs and then returned to UCHC as the Director of Facilities. Last year he moved to Birmingham, AL where he was the Director of Environmental Services at the Children's Hospital of Alabama. In all his positions he was constantly recognized as a skilled administrator with extensive knowledge of healthcare and dedication to his work. He worked hard to assure that his staff were treated fairly and compassionately, often with very little fanfare. He just wanted to do the right thing and was involved in many charities throughout his life. Tom loved sports and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. However, his real passion was golf. Tom was an accomplished golfer and played in several golf leagues. He ran both the Canton Business Golf League at Blue Fox Run and the UCHC Golf league at Tunxis Plantation. He traveled with his Dad to play on courses all over the world. He particularly enjoyed their trips to Scotland and Ireland. He had the opportunity to play Torrey Pines, Harbour Town, Kiawah, Teeth of the Dog and several other great courses. He shared the love of the beach with his Mom and could spend an entire day floating in the ocean with a peaceful grin on his face. He had a love of music and played several instruments. He also enjoyed going to yard sales and was always on the lookout for hidden treasure. Tom was quick witted and had a dry sense of humor, his sarcasm was an art form. At first you would not be sure he was joking and then he would flash you his mischievous grin and his sparkling eyes would give him away. He had of love of cool cars and always had something interesting to drive from his first car, a blue Land Rover that he rebuilt weekends with his father and grandfather, to the Red Fiat spider convertible to several BMWs, he always drove something special. Tom was an amazing Uncle to his nieces. He always quick with a joke and a laugh to make them smile. He was an amazing friend willing to do anything for you. Although some thought he was hard to get to know, once you broke through that shell, you were his friend forever. He will be missed by so many. A memorial service is scheduled for July 20th at 1:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton, CT. His family will receive friends prior to the service, starting at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The First Tee of Connecticut at 55 Golf Club Road, Cromwell, CT 06416. The family members would like to thank Tom's friends and coworkers for all the outpouring of love, help and support through this difficult time.
