COFFIN, Vernon L.
Vernon Leroy Coffin, 91, of the Elmwood section of West Hartford passed away on Christmas Day surrounded by his family. A dedicated family man, he celebrated 60 happily married years with his wife Carol, with whom he raised four sons as an original homeowner in Elmwood. A community servant, Vernon was a member of Elmwood Community Church where he served as Trustee and Head of Deacons and a Leader and Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, where he earned the Silver Beaver and George Meany awards along with a 50 Year pin. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the 13th Air Force in the Pacific Theater, after which he remained active for decades in the VFW and American Legion. Upon returning home from service, he was hired by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he worked for 37 years as a faithful employee and IAM member. Besides his wife, Carol, Vernon is survived by four sons, Stephen of Summit, NJ, Donald of Cheshire, James of Baltimore, MD and Timothy of Clarkston, MI; three daughters-in-law; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Elmwood Community Church, West Hartford. Burial with Military Honors will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours are Sunday, Dec. 30 from 2-4 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. Sorry to hear of your loss. I remember him visiting our house in East Hartford as a young man. I have the old Coffin photo album I uncovered from my parents storage bins.Our thoughts are with you.
