Walter Brunner Obituary

Walter Brunner, 80, of West Hartford, beloved husband of Dorly (Forrer) Brunner, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at John Dempsey Hospital surrounded by family and close friends. Born in Zurich, Switzerland to the late Heinrich and Margaret (Weyer) Brunner, he came to the US in 1955 and was a resident of West Hartford for over 52 years. Walter served our country proudly with the US Air Force and worked as a physicist for United Technologies Corporation. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield where he served as a head usher. Walter was a member of numerous tennis and bridge clubs. He loved to hike and was a longtime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club where he volunteered with their trail maintenance program. He also regularly volunteered with Loaves and Fishes Ministries in Hartford and Habitat for Humanity. Walter's true passion was his family and friends, he loved spending time with his family on hikes and family trips (especially trips to his and his wife's homeland Switzerland) and had many friends and "adopted" children. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Besides his wife Dorly, he is survived by his son Eric Brunner and his wife Denise; his daughters Gabrielle Brunner and her partner Christopher Lorenz, and Christeli Brunner and her spouse Hope Payson of Barkhamstead; his grandson Kyle Walter Brunner; his brother Lienhard Brunner and his wife Marianne of Switzerland; and his sister Gertrud Brunner Haegeli and her husband Peter of Switzerland. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Peter Brunner. His family will receive friends on Saturday, February 7 from 2 PM to 4 PM at the First Congregational Church, 10 Wintonbury Ave Bloomfield. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at the church on Saturday, February 14 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to the Appalachian Mountain Club Trail Fund, 5 Joy St Boston, MA 02108 or at www.outdoors.org/tribute or the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, 10 Wintonbury Ave Bloomfield, CT 06002. Dick Gagnon here in North Fort Myers, Florida. I worked with Walter for many years, Mostly as a card player at lunch time. I worked in the Publications Group and Walt would come and join us as he head time. My fondest memory of dear Walt is when he had a problem with something he would say, "If we go this way are going down ze drain!!!
I retired myself when I was 58 years old now I'm 79(Wow - I'm going down ze drain)and my wife Teresa moved from Vernon CT and have lived here in a retirement community ever since.

So long old buddy. It was great working and playing cards with you.
