Walter Scanlon Obituary

Walter Howard Scanlon Jr., a man of exceptional character, departed this world on Friday January 26, 2024, at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, and steadfast love for his family.

Reunited with the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" (Norris) Scanlon, they shared 57 years of love, laughter, and world travels until her passing in 2016. Peggy was his high school sweetheart, his fellow social butterfly and faithful companion, with whom he shared countless treasured memories. Together, they were inseparable, their love serving as an inspiration to all who knew them.

Born on May 29, 1932, and raised in the Chapel Hill area of Waterbury, Wally, as he was known to many, quickly became known as a star athlete. He attended Sacred Heart High School and excelled in three different sports, playing an instrumental role in leading his teams to championship victories. His athleticism and commitment to excellence laid the foundation for his future successes, and he remained active throughout his life, walking our local parks until his final days.

Following his graduation, Walter enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor until his discharge in 1951. Upon his return home, he furthered his education at Cheshire Academy and ultimately earned a degree from Boston University. Determined to make a difference, he briefly taught English before pursuing a career in law.

Wally's passion for justice led him to the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he honed his legal skills and embarked on an impressive career as an attorney and prosecutor.  As the Chief Assistant States Attorney for over a decade, he skillfully navigated numerous notable cases, earning the respect and admiration of his peers. Even in his retirement years, he continued to contribute his expertise by working part-time for local attorneys in his beloved hometown, sharing his wealth of knowledge well into his 80s. His dedication and tireless commitment to his craft were truly remarkable.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Wally's deep love for sports remained as he cheered on his favorite teams including the Mets, the Cowboys, and UCONN and Connecticut Sun Basketball. He found solace in tending to his garden, cultivating its beauty with the same care and dedication he displayed in all his endeavors. Proud of his Irish heritage, he celebrated and cherished his roots, visiting the country several times.

He was especially blessed to meet his companion of the last seven years of his life, Janet Granger, when she moved into his apartment complex in Bristol. He and Janet were a great match for each other and enriched each other's lives with a shared love of sports, sight-seeing, and their respective grandchildren.

Above all, Walter took great pride in being a devoted Grampy to his four adored grandchildren. He was ever present and beamed with joy whenever he spoke of them, their achievements, and their milestones.

Wally will forever be remembered as a man of integrity, compassion, and immeasurable strength, both mentally and physically. He touched the lives of countless individuals, and his legacy will live on through the stories shared and the values he instilled in those who had the honor of being part of his life's journey.

He was predeceased by his wife Peggy, his sons Brian and Craig, his infant daughter Mary Bridget, and his brother William.  He is survived by his sister-in-law Joan Scanlon, daughter-in-law Kate Scanlon, and his pride and joy, his

grandchildren Marykate Scanlon Jewett, Bridget Scanlon, Fiona Scanlon and Sean Scanlon; many extended family members and wide circle of friends.

In lieu of flowers, Wally's love for animals may be remembered with contributions to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd Newington CT 06111.

Family and friends may gather on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Parish, 235 Maltby St, Bristol.  Committal will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery Plainville.  For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com

A beautiful obituary for a very special man. Wally was such an inspiration to me throughout my life. A true friend. We will miss his annual trips to Florida to visit us. We are heartbroken that he has passed. We will forever miss him.
