Walter TAUBER Obituary

TAUBER M.D., Walter F. Walter F. Tauber, M.D., 83, formerly of Hartford and Longmeadow, MA, died December 18, 2009, in Barrington, RI, after an extended illness. He was born in Vienna, Austria on March 6, 1926, to the late Joseph and Alice (Frankfurther) Tauber. He fled Vienna with his family in 1938 to British India and found refuge in the United States in 1941. His primary and secondary education were in Vienna, Simla (India), and New York. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts and a doctorate from the Downstate Medical Center, State University of New York. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology for 40 years, first in Hartford then in western Massachusetts, providing a full range of care to any patient in need as well as training to several generations of new physicians. An avid bridge player, he achieved life master status. Long active in Congregation Kodimoh and the American Civil Liberties Union, he was a committed participant in America's democracy, saying of himself, "I am outspoken — but not by many." Walter is survived by Hanna, his wife of 57 years; his sons David of Conway, NH, Michael of Barrington, RI, Daniel of East Granby, CT, and Joshua of Cambridge, MA; his brother, Stephen of Lexington, MA; his daughters-in-law Joan of Barrington, RI and Paulette of East Granby, CT; and his grandchildren Kylie, Rachel, Rebecca, Benjamin, and Aaron. May his memory be for a blessing. Memorial contributions may be made to the ACLU (www.aclu.org).

To the family of Dr. Tauber,

I was very sorry to learn of Dr. Tauber's passing in the obituary that my mother sent to me. My belated condolences.

As a neighbor of your family when I was growing up in Springfield, I have nice memories of Dr. Tauber, and your family.

I am particularly grateful, as a Catholic, for all that I learned about Judaism from Dr. Tauber and your family; I still remember playing in the sukkah in your backyard on Mt. Holly Drive.

Again, my condolences. May the Omnipresent comfort you among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Dear Hanna, David, Michael, Daniel and Joshua,

Linda Fidnick, our father’s former law partner, just shared with us about Walter’s passing. I was moved by the beautiful tributes written about him. I know that it has been many years since we have all seen each other, but suddenly memories of Friday night Shabbats and monopoly marathons all together at your home in Springfield flooded back to me. I wanted to send a note to share that I am thinking about all of you.... my heart goes out to you and your families.

Warmest regards,

Bruni Burres

To the family of Dr. Tauber,
My mother(Gloria Beckford) saw the notice in today's Hartford Courant. Dr. Tauber delivered my 3 sisters and I at Wesson Martunity Hospital. Mom tells me he was a large but gentle man. She recalls the Dr. calling dad to let him know he had a son on 12/13/1965. Mom is showing me the Dr.'s signiture on my siser Kerry's birth notice.
My parents Gloria and Oswald, sisters Lisa, Kerry, Kim and I, send our deepest sympathy for your loss.

I just read a wondeful article in The Republican recognizing Dr. Walter Tauber and was very touched that the paper took the time to pay respect to a reader that sent in letters. I wanted to make sure his family was aware that a nice article was written about their husband, father and grandfather.

To the Family of Dr. Tauber:
Dr. Tauber, in his conversation and debates around the table always made one think deeply about what was being said - not just the words, but the meanings and nuances behind the words. He will be missed.

To Dr. Taubers Family,
He was a wonderful Dr. He was my grandmothers Dr. , my mothers Dr. and my Dr. And yes he was very outspoken. But he could be, because he knew his stuff. I know you all will miss him, I will.

My condolences to Walter's family and friends.

I enjoyed working with Walter on civil liberties projects. Our 1988 law suit, with the help of the CLUM, won the right to display political lawn signs in Longmeadow.

Walter was a strong supporter of the First Amendment and a thoughtful, independent Democrat.
