William Goldstein Obituary

William "Bill" Zanvil Goldstein, 93, of Bloomfield, died peacefully, Thursday November 6, 2014. He was the beloved husband, for 55 years, of Gladys Alter Goldstein. Born in Waterbury, he was the son of David and Ellen (Rashin) Goldstein. He attended high school in Waterbury and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Hartford. Bill was a US Army Veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Post #45. He worked for many years as an employee of Kay Jewelers in Washington, D.C. and then changed careers to pursue his love of teaching. He then taught business classes at Weaver High School in Hartford for 25 years. Bill and Gladys were long-time members of Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield. He was a volunteer in the town on the Zoning Board. He also assisted seniors with both tax preparation and drivers education. Bill was an avid reader of magazines and newspapers, loved crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his wife Gladys, he is survived by two children: Daniel E. Goldstein and his wife Kari of Roswell, Georgia, and Carol D. O'Brien and her husband Michael of Kingsland, Georgia, three cherished grandchildren; Mathew O' Brien and his wife Alice, Nicholas O'Brien, and Aria Goldstein, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. A funeral will be held on Sunday November 9th at 1:00 P.M. with Rabbi Gary Atkins and Rabbi Philip Lazowski officiating at the Beth Hillel Synagogue, 160 Wintonbury Avenue, Bloomfield. Interment will follow at the Beth Hillel Memorial Park Cemetery, 15 Wolcott Road, in East Granby. Following interment, the family will receive friends at Beth Hillel Synagogue, in its social hall. The family will receive again on Monday at the Goldstein residence from 1-5 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of donor's choice. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation to the staff of St. Francis Hospital and the Hebrew Home Restorative Care Unit. May his memory be a source of strength and a blessing. To the Goldstein family:

I write to extend my deepest sympathy upon the death of my friend Bill Goldstein. Bill and I were colleagues at Weaver High school. There was never a kinder, compassionate, or dedicated person than Bill. The students at Weaver were so fortunate to have been schooled and mentored by Bill. He will be remembered in my prayers.

Danny, so sorry for your loss. Take comfort in knowing that your dad is no longer suffering and is watching over you and your family. Blessings to all of you now and always.

I was a Weaver staff member (guidance chairperson) with Bill and remember him fondly. He made a difference in the lives of a great many students, who must also remember him with gratitude.
