William Gordon Obituary

May 15, 1933 – July 9, 2018 William Carlton Gordon passed away suddenly on July 9, 2018 at the age of 85 years. A native of Delmar, New York, Bill was a star running back and track athlete for Bethlehem Central High School before attending Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where he graduated with a BA in Economics. He worked briefly at General Electric in Schenectady, NY before being drafted into the Army and serving in post-war Korea. He excelled at Army football, long jump, and sprints and returned to the U.S. early to participate in the All Army Meet. Bill began his career at Traveler's Insurance in Hartford, CT in 1958. He graduated with an MBA from the University of Connecticut in 1970 and eventually moved on to Colonial Bank before joining and leading Eastern Management Services, a personnel consulting firm. Bill was an active member of the community, serving on numerous church committees and library and town boards, and was an active member and past president of the Cheshire Rotary Club and First Congregational Church on the Green in Cheshire, CT. He had a rich tenor voice and sang in many church and community choirs and, since moving to Elim Park, has been a member of the "Harmonizers," a men's choral group. Bill was a devoted family man and Husky's fan. He loved sports and being active. He was a lover of birds and nature. Nothing brought him more joy than throwing a football and engaging in lively conversation with family, friends, or complete strangers alike. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Marilyn Sue (Wenner), son David (Pamela Skripak) two grandchildren, Hallie and Braden Skripak Gordon, sister Margaret Barber, many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. He is predeceased by daughter Linda Louise Gordon and parents Carlton C. and Helen Stowe Gordon. Friends may greet Bill's family at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 So. Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410 on Friday, July 13, 2018 from 5PM until 7PM. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11AM, on Saturday, July 14, at the First Congregational Church on the Green, 111 Church Drive, Cheshire, CT. Interment will be at the Gordon family plot in Hazardville, CT at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to The First Congregational Church or the Elim Park Benevolent Fund, 150 Cook Hill Road, Cheshire, CT 06410.
