Herr McNamara was among the finest teachers (German) I ever knew. He was able to interact with so many personality types and language ability levels- a true diplomat and communicator. "When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men."- Longfellow

I first met 'Mayor Bill' when he was directing traffic at the newly opened Pulaski High School. I was lucky enough to be in both his English and German Classes when he later joined the faculty. I was not a very good student but with his help and encouragement I made to the end. Four years later when I graduated from College he was one of the first to call and invited me for a visit. His congratulations mean a lot to me. I have never forgotten and in some measure he helped turn this potential 'drop out' into a reasonably productive citizen. RIP and Danke

My deepest sympathies, condolences and prayers go out to the family of Billy Mac. I was a very good friend of his nephew, Paul A. Shaker and met Mayor McNamara through my friendship with "Shake". I enjoyed listening and talking to him because he had such a great sense of humor and, unlike politicians today, he respected any opposing political view points. The world lost a great mayor, teacher, and human being. R.I.P. Billy Mac!

Mr. McNamara was one of the most influential teachers I have had. Learning German, I will never unlearn the difference between `an´ and `auf´ once bill jumped up on the desk! RIP

Bill was one of a kind. What you saw was what you got. He was devoted to New Britain and a fighter for the city. One never spoke to Bill without learning something. Condolences to Sam and and his family.

Very sorry to hear of Mayor McNamara's passing. I had the honor of working for him as a special projects' coordinator in 1978 right out of U of H Graduate School.
Bill was great to work for as Mayor. He was dedicated to our City of New Britain and had tremendous amounts of energy and vision as well as a great sense of humor. I enjoyed every minute working for such a civic leader. I don't think New Britain will ever have someone like him again to lead the city, To his family, and all his friends, my heartfelt deepest sympathy.

Very sad to hear of Bill´s passing. He was often a guest on my radio show and had a great sense of humor. He sent me Christmas cards signed: "Mayor McCheese" (a name I had coined for him over the years). RIP my friend. You will be missed. "Sebastian in the Morning "
