Billie Allen Obituary

Dr. Billie M. Allen

Hattiesburg

Dr. Billie M. Allen, 65, of Hattiesburg, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015.

She was born on December 1, 1949 to Hansel R. and Mary Bynum Morgan. Dr. Allen was a lifelong resident of Hattiesburg.

Dr. Allen was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and received her PhD from the University of North Texas. She began her professional career in Student Services at USM serving as Director of High School and Junior College Relations and also director of "Southern Style". In the early 80's she became an instructor in the Management Department and worked several summers in Texas obtaining her doctorate degree. She held many positions within the department, including Chair.

Dr. Allen loved teaching and her students, and they loved her. She felt it her duty to prepare them for the "real world" and took great pride in their academic and personal achievements. Nothing thrilled her more than visits from former students who returned to campus to thank her for the difference she made in their lives. Some even confessed that at times they didn't really like her because she pushed them too hard and challenged them to do their best and not settle. She was admired and respected by all who knew her.

The greatest joys in her life were her daughter, M. Susan Morgan and her three grandchildren, Shelby Grace, Walker and Lola Cheatham. She was proud of their academic achievements and loved their creative abilities with the pictures they drew and the stories they wrote and told. She was looking forward to a visit from them during the upcoming spring break.

Billie is survived by her daughter, Susan and her husband Michael Cheatham; her three grandchildren; two sisters, Judith M. Holton of Ft. Worth, TX, Jean M. Hoem of Rapid City, SD; and her aunt Mary Knight Armstrong of Eatonville.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts to commemorate her life should be made to the USM Foundation, in memory of Dr. Billie Allen, 118 College Drive, #5210 Hattiesburg, MS 39406.
