Roger Schmitt Obituary

Roger Richard Schmitt, 79, passed away Jan. 10, 2021 in Lake Havasu City.
Roger was born on Sept. 20, 1941 to Clifton and Imogene Schmitt in Tucson. Roger was married to the love of his life Dianne Orlie Schmitt on July 14, 1962 in Phoenix. Together, they shared more than 60 years of love and 58 years of marriage.
Roger was blessed with three children and three granddaughters. Roger and Dianne moved to Lake Havasu City in 2000. They enjoyed watching and spending time with their beautiful granddaughters. Roger also loved traveling with Dianne throughout the U.S. in their 5th Wheel RV. Some of Roger's other hobbies included building Mustang Motorcycles and welding cactus statues out of horseshoes. In his younger years, Roger was a certified divemaster and a dive instructor for LA County National Association of Underwater Instructors. Roger served for 30 years in the U. S. Navy and Navy Reserve, rising to the rank of lieutenant commander at retirement. He was particularly proud of his submarine service aboard the USS JAMES MADISON SSBN-667 and USS GROWLER SSG-577. He also had a long career at TRW Space Systems in Redondo Beach, California.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his Daughter Janet Schmitt Dunn and granddaughter Sabrina Dianne Dunn. He is survived by his wife Dianne Schmitt of Lake Havasu City, daughter Candy Schmitt of Lake Havasu City, son Jeffery and daughter-in-law Brenda Schmitt of Lake Havasu, granddaughters Noey and Skyla Schmitt of Lake Havasu City, brother Larry and Linda Schmitt of Austin, Texas and sister Kathy Terrell of Scottsdale.
Due to covid concerns no services are planned but the family plans to hold one at a future date.

Paul & Linda Cote

December 15, 2023

We were saddened to learn of Roger's passing today while browsing the USS James Madison web site. Paul & Roger were shipmates in the early sixties. We were good friends then and visited Roger and Diane in Phoenix a few years back. He was a friendly outgoing friend to Linda and I and we always enjoyed the time we spent together. Separated by geography, Paul and Roger corresponded frequently via social media. We will miss him.

Roger was always full of energy and stories. I didn't always understand his acronyms but was always fun to see him use them. His passing is such a loss to the entire family. I really miss our conversations.

Roger was a good man, had a perpetual smile and always willing to help a shipmate. I'll miss getting that call when he would roll through Phoenix.

Condolences to the Schmitt family. Always enjoyed our times and service at the Lake Havasu Yacht Club. He was devoted to Dianne and everyone at the club enjoyed having dinners with them both. He will be missed.
