Steven Bassman Obituary

Steven B. Bassman

West Des Moines

Steven B. Bassman passed away peacefully Friday, August 1 with his family at his side. Steve was born January 25, 1946, in Des Moines, Iowa to Gertrude (Tobis) and David Bassman. He attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, graduating in 1964. Steve went on to attend the University of Oklahoma in Norman and eventually transferred to Drake University. In 1968 he met and married Penny (Hightshoe), the love of his life and his wife of 46 years. Steve was a commercial real estate broker in the Des Moines area for well over forty years. He was a member of Beth El Jacob Synagogue and Temple B'Nai Jeshurun.

Steve was a kind, gentle and humble person who cherished his family more than anything else in his life. He happily spent much of his time teasing and tormenting his 11 beloved grandchildren and they spent a lot of time laughing with him and at him as he continued to find new ways to surprise and delight them. They all adored their beloved "Papa."

Steve is survived by his wife, Penny, and his daughters Jami Bassman, Keri (Todd) Ross, Leigh (Scott) Remsburg and Jill (Jim) Mollison. His grandchildren are Samantha, (Anna - a blessed memory), Avery, Alex, Ellie, Jack, Owen, Riley, Charlie, Eli, Jake and Emma. He is also survived by his brothers Jerome (Kathy) and Ron Bassman and his sister, Elaine (Skip) Spielberg. He wants his family to always remember the following: "There's no place like home," "Let your conscience be your guide," "Think outside the box," "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened," "Say your traveling prayer," I want to pay the dinner check - allow me my dignity," "Don't forget to give to Tzedakah," "If you can't talk to your parents, who can you talk to?" "Do the right thing and don't expect a reward," and above all else - "Corvettes Always." Steve Bassman was a great, great man in every way.

Services will be held at Temple B'Nai Jeshurun at 51st & Grand Ave. in Des Moines on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Jewish Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines. The family welcomes friends and family for a meal of condolence immediately following the burial. The family will also be sitting Shiva for Steve on Monday evening from 6:00 - 7:30 at Temple B'Nai Jeshurun.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to either Temple B'Nai Jeshurun, the Animal Rescue League or the charity of your choice in memory of Steve.
