Adam Black Obituary

Adam Black, 80, was born on Dec. 4, 1927, to John and Annie Black in McHenry County, N.D. Adam passed away on Dec. 28, 2007, at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, N.D.

Adam married Ada Axtman and they shared their lives together for over 60 years. After they started their family in North Dakota, they traveled around the country following the oil industry. During this time their family continued to grow in numbers and finished with a grand total of 11 children. Adam and Ada have lived in a variety of locations to include Williston, N.D., Havre, Butte, and they finally settled in Helena to finish raising all their children. During their time in Helena, Adam worked for St. Johns Hospital and St. Peters Hospital, then went to work at the Mountain View School for Girls. Adam and Ada then took a business adventure and opened up Next To Haps Cafe. During this time all eleven children and several grandchildren had their turn working side by side with Mom and Dad. After 14 years of running Next To Haps Cafe, they both decided it was time to retire. They ended up moving back to Rugby, to "God's country" as Adam liked to say, to finish out their lives together. In Adam's spare time he enjoyed whistling while he walked, riding his Goldwing and having coffee with all his friends.

Adam was preceded in death by his wife Ada in August of 2005; both of his parents; three grandchildren; and his son John Black in March 2004.

He is survived by 10 of his children, Harold Black of Butte, Ann Black of East Helena, Donna Hubert of East Helena, Shirley Kelley (Bob) of Puyallup, Wash., Roger Black of Helena, Ron Black (Ellen) of Helena, Betty Dalin (Tim) of East Helena, Rodney Black (Amy) of Reno, Nev., Tammy Laible (Mark) of Helena, and Jimmy Black of Helena. Adam has 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his friends and family.

A funeral service will be held today, Jan. 2, at 11 a.m., at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby.

My heartfelt sympathies to you all. Obviously I missed knowing a couple of wonderful people. I knew Ann and worked with her at 4B's and she taught a wonderful work ethic which I'm sure she learned from her parents. Be happy for the time you had with your parents.

To the Black Family, I still remember all the great lunches your Dad and Mom served up at "Next to Haps". I ate lunch there countless times back in the early 80's when I was still living in Helena. My condolence to all of you. STEVE

My heart felt thoughts go out to Adam's family. I knew Adam back in the early 70's when he would come into the 4B's Cafeteria in the mall. I always found him to be full of grace and goodness, caring for others and sharing his own heart to all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. Thomas Fujii Stockstill

My daughters and I would go to Next to Haps every Saturday after finishing their newspaper route. They loved the huge cinammon rolls. Even years after my children were grown and gone Ada and Adam would ask about them. Ada and Adam were good people, they will be sorely missed.
