Claudia J. (Tannehill) Buxton
Oct. 28, 1943 - Feb. 19, 2023
EVERET, WA - Claudia Jean (Tannehill) Buxton left us on February 19, 2023. Claudia was born in Helena, MT, on October 28, 1943. We, her family, colleagues and friends will miss her so very much. Claudia found great joy in making and keeping friends. It is important to note that many individuals found their way back to her throughout her life. They wanted to thank her; to share stories with her and continue friendships. She was a person of great integrity, talent, generosity of spirit, loyalty and intellect. She had a sincere faith in God and lived out her life quietly demonstrating her Christianity on a daily basis.
Claudia's beloved husband of 50 years, James Cole Buxton, predeceased her by only ten months. She is survived by her sisters: Kathy Saville, Buckeye, AZ, and Terry Fisher, Butte, MT. Her sisters, Betty Gress and Bonnie Vincent predeceased her. She remained close to Jim's family, including his sisters, Melody Zavis, Luella Paul, her nephew, Anthony Williams and his wife Lisa and nephew Phillip Williams.
Claudia was raised on ranches in Montana until age ten. She then moved back to Helena with her mother and stepfather where she completed her high school education. Claudia began her education in a one room schoolhouse, which she credits with bestowing her love of reading. After graduating from Helena Senior High in 1961, Claudia moved on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Business Education from Northwest Nazarene University in 1968. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and humorously blamed not earning Summa Cum Laude to working two and three jobs during her entire college career. Seattle University was the site of the accomplishment of her Master's Degree in Counseling.
Claudia described herself as a teacher at heart. Nothing could be truer. Her 54-year career went full circle; from teacher, to counselor, to consultant, to director and back to teacher. Everywhere Claudia worked she innovated, improved and set educational precedents; and at each venue she was recognized with distinctions and awards. In 1968, Claudia began her teaching career at Lake Stevens High School in Business Education. From there she moved to the Edmonds School District to create their first Career Centers. Shortly thereafter, Claudia moved to the Mukilteo School District as their first Vocational Program Director and then as the Director of the Sno-Isle Skills TECH center, where she worked tirelessly with superintendents, legislators, and her skills center director counterparts to carry the banner of the importance of Vocational Education for students. She then retired; but not for long. Claudia began "teaching teachers" who sought Vocational Teaching Certifications at several Puget Sound colleges. Claudia was 78 when she retired for the final time.
She maintained lifelong friendships with many of her professional colleagues; even when they scattered during their careers to different districts and statewide positions.
At the center of Claudia's activities and interests were adventures with her "personal cheerleader," Jim. They fished and vacationed in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Norway and London. They particularly enjoyed cruises. Claudia demonstrated her creative side by designing jewelry. Claudia was quick to share her adventures and interests with friends and family who often found themselves included.
To know Claudia Jean Buxton was to feel seen and to be accepted without judgement. She will long be missed.
The services for Claudia will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 8517 7th Avenue SE, Everett, WA, 98208.

I have known Claudia many years via career and technical education. She was always very warm and outreaching with any help if needed. The last time I saw Claudia was at our 2022 retired CTE directors Christmas luncheon. I knew that she and her husband loved fishing but I didn't know they had a fishing store. Claudia you will be missed! Alerd

We will miss Claudia and her visits always. I met Claudia when I applied for the Mukilteo School District . What a Blessing to see her devoted Secretary , Sheila and her work together to support the qualified and lovely staff at Mariner HS, Aces HS, and the Middle Schools. At that time Kamiak was waiting to be built.
She supported staff, District Offfice staff and was welcoming to all who came to her office..
After I got hired w MSD we enjoyed meeting the staff, advisory councils, and I noticed how innovative and forward thinking she was with implementation to new programs.

In all my years of service to the Mukilteo School District. Claudia Buxton was THE most influential boss I've ever had. Her passion and love for kids both at Sno Isle and in general was unmatched. I cherish every memory I have of working with/for Claudia and share what a wonderful person she was every chance I get. Thank You Claudia, for believing in me and the opportunities you provided me that have helped me grow both personally and professionally! I will always treasure our friendship!

Claudia was a dear friend and confidant. She was my mentor at Sno-Isle Skills Center for which I will be forever grateful. I appreciated her professionalism and genuine concern for staff and students. As Director of Sno-Isle Skills Center, she was an advocate for career-technical education at the State level. The other Washington State skills center directors looked to her for her expertise. Claudia was a good person who truly cared for others. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.

To know Claudia was to understand grace. As Vocational Director colleagues, I looked up to her, gleaned her knowledge and shared visions. I will always consider her the "queen" of Voc Directors. She was a friend to all and helped so many succeed on their own. She is missed by many and loved by all who knew her.

I met Claudia as a kid at my grandparents home in Helena Montana. She was a friend of my aunt Karen. She was always kind to me and always had a great smile. I´m not sure when lewis met her and Jim but I´m sure it was at my aunts home in Seattle. Lewis felt a real bond with her because of her being a teacher. Lewis´ mom was a teacher. We lost contact with her when we lived in Pullman Washington. Shortly after moving over here to Everett in 2000 we often went to the Mill restaurant on Saturday mornings. It´s was such an amazing Saturday when we went for breakfast and Jim and Claudia were there. That was the beginning of Saturday breakfasts with them. Because if Lewis´ jobs we weren´t always able to get together but when we could it was like we were never apart for long. We miss the get together after moving out to Granite Falls. We are 3 miles from town up there mountain in the woods. We did try to meet a couple of times which was awesome. Always smiles and fun conversation. We will miss those special breakfasts. We will miss her up attitude and heaven will enjoy her beauty and love and that precious smile. Prayers to her friends and families.

Bonded friends since we were 12, we grew up and up together, forever intertwined. Even our husbands knew each other before we knew either of them. I love you, Claudia. You will always have your own room in my heart.

Wow, what a wonderful person Mrs. Buxton was. I was a student at Lake Stevens High and she was my counselor. Later, when she was the director, she hired me to teach a new program at Sno-Isle. She touched so many lives in a positive way! God Bless.

What a dear lady, both mentor and friend. Claudia gave so generously of her time and had a wealth of educational knowledge. I credit Claudia with my success in the classroom. I so enjoyed my time working with Claudia at Sno-Isle Tech, and our friendship beyond, in our senior years. Claudia was a credit to the education profession. I will surely miss this special woman. God speed Claudia. With heartfelt sympathy to the family.
