Craig Steinbach Obituary

Craig A. Steinbach

September 11, 1956 - April 25, 2025

Craig Alan Steinbach, 68, of Townsend, MT, passed away April 25, 2025 following a battle with cancer. He was in hospice in Centennial, CO.

Craig was born September 11, 1956, in Hettinger, ND, the son of Richard and Luella (Tenold) Steinbach. The third of six children, Craig had fond memories of growing up on the farm with his siblings. He was a 1974 graduate of Hettinger High School and was proud to have attended his 50th reunion last summer.

After graduating with his bachelor's degree in mining engineering from South Dakota School of Mines in 1978, he moved to Forsyth, MT where he worked for Peabody Mining Productions. In 1980, Craig met the love of his life, Rosie, at that mine. They were married July 3, 1981.

In 1991, Craig transferred to Kayenta, AZ, where he worked as a mining engineer. In 2007, he moved back to Forsyth and worked for Westmoreland Mining as a production superintendent until he retired in September 2019.

Craig enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended Mountain Valley Church in Townsend, MT, and enjoyed gardening and working outside.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rosalie; four stepsons, John (Lorrie) Moos of Townsend, MT, Dirk Moos of Maui, HI, Todd (Marnie) Moos of Thorton, CO and Daren (Angelica) Moos of Parker, CO; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Richard (Clara) Steinbach of Eden, GA, Michael Steinbach of Blaine, MN, Lynda (Paul) Nelson of Lakesville, MN, Lori (Myron) Vail of Bowman, ND and Mark (Janice) Steinbach of Albuquerque, NM; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Craig was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Merle and Minnie Krueger; and his brother-in-law, Hugh Krueger.

I was saddened to hear of Craig's passing, Rosie. We have been connected for over fifty years as I spent a number of weekends at the Steinbach farm thanks to his sister, Lynda. Those were wonderful times filled with laughter and possibly brother/sister tiffs. And then what a surprise when I discovered he was working at the mines here at Colstrip! Craig reminded me so much of his dad with his sharp sense of humor. Praying you and all his family are comforted through faith and happy memories.
