Dennis Casey Obituary

Dennis David Casey, 88, of Lawrence, KS, passed away on Saturday, July 20, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.

Dennis was born in Bainville, ND, on October 14, 1935, the youngest child of Harry and Lily Casey and he grew up in Wolf Point, MT, played basketball at Montana State University, and met Jean Peterson while there (although she attended rival University of Montana). They married in 1956, lived in Bozeman, MT, until he graduated, and they returned to Wolf Point where he owned Casey Livestock and, later, Sidney Livestock, with his father and brother.

Dennis and Jean had four children. An enthusiastic community booster with a contagious, positive personality, he was on the Wolf Point School board before serving in the Montana House of Representatives in 1975 and 1976; and then as Secretary of the Montana Senate in 1979. Later that same year, the family moved to Shawnee, KS, and he worked in government relations for the Livestock Marketing Association in Kansas City. In 1989 he and Jean moved to Helena, MT, where he served as Commissioner of State Lands under Gov. Stan Stephens, and as a lobbyist for the Gaming Industry Association.

Dennis and Jean retired to Tucson, AZ, and he became a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), representing children who had been removed from their homes.

Dennis and Jean moved to Lawrence in 2014.

He is survived by Jean, Lawrence; daughter Jill Giele and son-in-law John of Lawrence; son Daniel and daughter-in-law Katherine Percival of New York, NY; grandchildren David Casey, Las Vegas, NV; Amanda Giele, Lawrence; Jenna Giele, Chicago, IL; Ella Casey and Ian Casey, New York; and brothers and sisters-in-law Gene and Peg Marianetti, Locust Grove, VA, and Leroy and Mabel Hasbrouck of Lanark, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Family from across the country celebrated Dennis with a virtual service on August 7. His ashes will be interred in Greenwood Cemetery in Wolf Point, near his sons David Casey and Joseph Casey. He was also predeceased by his parents and siblings (Donna Nygaard, Wolf Point, MT; Loren Casey, Sidney, MT; and Hope McCracken, Phoenix, AZ).

If you are inclined to honor Dennis with a donation in his name, please consider any organization that helps children, Douglas County, KS (or any other) CASA would be at the top of his list.

And I will go into the altar of God; to God who giveth joy to my youth. (Psalm 43:4

Dear All, my husband John North had the pleasure of being Mr. Casey´s lawyer when he was commissioner of state lands in Montana! John both respected and liked Mr. Casey as his boss. In my living room still hangs a beautiful picture of Logan Pass that he gave us. I cherish the picture and the memories of Mr Casey!! Thankyou for sharing your husband and Dad with us! sad news...It was a real honor that he worked on my US Senate campaign against Max B. Dennis just to supportive and positive. He did not give joy...he spread it
