Everett Shuey Obituary

Everett Ezra Shuey passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the Vintage Suites Care Facility in Butte. He was 88. In the last years of his life he was attended to and cared for by his loving niece, Connie Dewey, and Blossom, the only dog he ever allowed in his home.

Everett was born to Rosco and Rose Shuey on July 23, 1919, in Sanders. He was the youngest of six children. He met the love of his life, Aggie (Thurston) Shuey, while attending Montana State University in Bozeman, and they married on Oct. 16, 1943. They were married for 53 years until Aggie passed away in September 1996.

Everett served his country when he joined the Marines in June 1943. He became a platoon leader and later, a company commander and battalion operations officer, whereby he participated in the Guam and Iwo Jima operations. He was discharged honorably as a captain in March 1946.

He attended Montana State University and received a B.A. in agriculture with a major in management. He began his career as a lobbyist for the Montana Wool Growers Association and was actively employed for 23 years. He was also proud of his accomplishments as editor of the Montana Wool Growers Magazine and was honored by the Wool Growers Association with a presentation of the Blue and Gold Award of Montana State University.

His career also included 14 years with Montana Power Company as a manager of governmental affairs, whereby he was known for his work as a legislative lobbyist. In fact, an article in a November 1984 Great Falls Tribune called him the "Dean of legislative lobbyists" because of his tenure and service in the legislature since 1948 - longer than any state legislator in the country at the time. In addition, he was appointed to the National Public Lands Advisory Council of the Bureau of Land Management by President Ronald Reagan. He retired in 1985 and pursued his great loves, hunting, fishing and traveling. He spent many of his adventures in Alaska. He could be deemed the "great outdoorsman."

Everett's life was blessed with a loving wife, great friends, exciting career and many adventures. He touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with throughout the years. Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Aggie, and three brothers and two sisters, and is survived by nieces, Connie (Thurston) Dewey, Bev (Rice) Adams, Charline (Rice) Spain, Cinda (Thurston) Nichols and Sue Anne (Thurston) Robinson. He had requested that no services follow his cremation and requested that all memorials be made to the Butte Food Bank, 1019 E. 2nd St., Butte, MT.

I met Everett and Aggie when I was a little girl. My grandparents Cliff & Agnes Small were friends of the Shuey's in Helena. My parents Bill & Tuffy Haselhorst were also friends of Everett's and visited him when they were in Butte. When my mom told me of his passing I thought back to when I would visit Helena in the summer. Holly Fallon and I would walk down the alley to visit Everett and Aggie for lunch. They were very gracious to have 2 preteens in their home. I remember the books, sheep skins and beautiful Alaksa pictures. A good time was always had with them. My thoughts are with his family at this time.

Everett was the first friend I ever had, and the longest running fiendship I have. I spent my youth growing up as Everett and Aggie's nextdoor neighbor. I hunted and fish and learned so much about being a man from a truelly wonderful human being. His legacy will carry on in my brother, parents and I. I thank Everett for taking me on one of his Alaskan adventures. He opened my eyes to a whole new life. I know for his sake he is resting more peacefully. I shared countless adventures in Montana, Canada, British Columbia travels, always relating to the outdoors. I wish everybody the best in coping with the loss of such a wonderful man, but we need to carry him with us in our actions everyday so he's not forgotten.

Ev Shuey was a great man and a good friend. He was the most honest, forthright lobbyist the Montana Legislature ever had. Men with his leadership, vision and integrity in politics are a rare commodity these days. Rest in Peace Our Friend!

I knew Mr. Shuey through my father John Willard. They served in the Legislature together and shared hunting adventures. My memories of Mr. Shuey were that of a very self assured gentleman. He will be missed, and in my father's memory I bid Everett farewell.

Everett was my Dad's--Victor Smith-- great friend all through college and on into their respective careers. Vic always enjoyed telling the story of Everett having a winning night at the tables in Uptown Butte after the War ended, and he was on his way to homestead up in Alaska. According to my Dad, Everett took his winnings to Bozeman and used them to pay tutition and enroll at Montana State College.
At the capitol Everett was always very kind to a young lobbyist who was the son of an old friend.
Several years ago Mr. Shuey sent me a few WWII photos of my Dad and his B-17 crew with the words "Here's How' written in Vic's hand on one of them. It is a treasured keepsake.
My Mom, dorothy, and I will miss him dearly. Along with my Dad, she knew and loved Everett and Aggie fo many, many years and she, too, will miss him dearly.

Everett was the most genuine true friend a person could have. I have known him since I was a little girl. He and Aggie were my folk's best friends. He was there for all of our family fun and tradgedies. I loved him like a "Grandpa." I hunted with him since I was about 6 years old. He would shoot a wild turkey, then he would be so excited, I would have to run his asthma medicine to him, He would have a "puff" and away we would go again. So much fun.....
I will never forget a man like this.

I am writing on behalf of myself and Daughter Cary. We loved Everett and treasured the times we spent with him in his home in Butte, MT while Connie was caring for his every need during the last few years of his life.

He was a true Montana Man in every way. He made his mark on Montana politics, and National politics. His last few years were made very comfortable by his loving neice Connie and her Dalmation, Blossom. Everett never allowed a Dog in his home until Connie came to stay with him, and care for him. His love for both Connie and Blossom was always very evident. Cary and I loved visiting, and hearing his stories of his lobbying days, and hunting and fishing in Montana and Alaska. He truly lived a wonderful life, and, we rejoice that he is now reunited with the love of his life, Aggie Thurston Shuey in God's eternal Kingdom. We are happy for you Everett. Peace of Christ to you and all who will miss you.

The memory of spending time with my aunt and uncle will always have a special place in my heart. Everett had a dynamic way of saying one's name and at the same time having a feisty twinkle in his eye. There was the time he paid us kids a penny for every mushroom we picked; we had so much fun picking mushrooms that gray, overcast day.

A special thanks to Connie Dewey for stepping up three years ago to help Everett remain in his home. In living with him for the last three years, she helped him retain his dignity and independance up to the end.

Everett was an excellent lobbyist. He lobbied until 1969 for the Montana Wool Growers Assn, and was most instrumental in passing the Wool Act of 1954. Rest in peace.

We all loved Everett, and enjoyed our blessed time with him, visiting Connie and him in Butte many times. He was an exceptional Man, who lived a very blessed life, leaving an impression on all who knew him, as a friend, or business contact. He loved Montana, and Connie, by a twist of fate, with the sudden passing of her Father in Bozeman, came into his life at a time of great need for care and love, and the person who helped him, and guided him through the last few years of his life. She kept him in his beautiful home until the last few months. She was with him with he passed, and held his hand through the great transition that we all face at some time. Everett was, and is, the epitomy of a Montana Man. He loved the State, and reveled in the beauty of it. It is a harsh place to live at times, but, Everett was always up to the challenges of living and thriving in Montana. He left a mark on the State and his Community, and on his dear family that survives him, especially his dear neice Connie who loved him, and cared for him and gave a true quality to his final years. We love you Everett, and Connie.... I wright this on behalf of myself, and Connie and my daughter, Cary....
