Myron Maxey

Myron Maxey, 86, of Jonesboro passed away on January 25, 2023. His family will hold a private graveside service in Lexington, Georgia in the coming months.

Mr. Maxey hails from a large family; his father served as a probate judge in Oglethorpe County, while his mother passed away when he was a small child, leaving his ten brothers and sisters to raise him during the Great Depression and Second World War. He attended Oglethorpe County High School, where he played on the school's football and basketball teams. He was baptized at Lexington Baptist Church, and attended there regularly. Due to his work schedule, he attended but did not graduate from Georgia Tech and Atlanta's John Marshall School of Law. He went on to work for Georgia Highway Express, Allstate, and Maxey Insurance Agency, which he founded (1971) and operated until his death. While working at Georgia Highway Express, he met and married his wife Nita, to whom he was married for nearly sixty years. During his time in the insurance business, Mr. Maxey also served as the mayor of Morrow (1970-1971) after several years of serving as a city councilman. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Forest Park, where he was first ordained as a deacon. He and Nita later became members of First Baptist Church of Morrow, where he taught Sunday school and served on various committees. During his time there, he helped create and support the Good Shepherd Clinic. A life-long fan of the Georgia Tech football team, he was a season-ticket holder for fifty-two years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and planting flowers with his children and grandchildren, especially at his lake house near his childhood home. Mr. Maxey is survived by his wife, Nita Maxey; sister, Sue McKenney; children, Stanley Maxey (Michelle) and Lisa Bicksel (Jim); and grandchildren, Holly Anne Maxey, Wesley Maxey, Michael Bicksel, Ashley Bicksel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
