Bruce Ratcliff Obituary

BRUCE ALAN RATCLIFF, M.D. of Huntington, WV passed away on June 1, 2025, at the age of 85 after an extended illness with pulmonary fibrosis.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Gilbert A Ratcliff Sr., Jessie Vaughan Ratcliff and brother Dr. Gilbert A. Ratcliff, Jr.
Bruce was born in 1940 in Huntington, WV. He attended Miller Elementary, and Huntington High. He graduated from Washington and Lee University. The next four years were spent at the University of Virginia Medical School. After completing medical school he interned at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. His next four years were spent in OB/GYN residency at University of Virginia. He joined the Army and served 2 years, providing OB/GYN services at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, GA.
In 1973, he returned to Huntington, joining his father in private OB/GYN practice. He enjoyed all aspects of providing medical service. He enjoyed his patients, their families, coworkers, and was a willing participant in the jobs that keep a hospital in order.
He was a Diplomat of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist; Member and President of Cabell Huntington Hospital Board of Trustees; Chief of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service; Chairman of the Credential Committee; Clinical Professor Obstetrics and Gynecology at Marshall University Medical School; Member of the Utilization and Review, the Surgery and the Tissue Committees; Mt. State Blue Cross Blue Shield Medical Advisory Committee; Tri State Health Partners; CNA District Claim Review Panel; and Cabell County Medical Society (President 1985). He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. At the end of his career he was honored when Cabell Huntington Hospital named the Residents Room after him.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Donahoe Ratcliff; son Bruce Alan Ratcliff Jr., and his wife Lara Shelton Ratcliff, their two children Elizabeth Ratcliff Buettner and her husband Zachary Hunter Buettner, and Charles Alan Ratcliff; son Todd McHenry Ratcliff; son Jonathan Clark Ratcliff and his wife Veronica Esposita Ratcliff; and daughter Ann Barclay Fuss and her two children Harrison Robert Fuss and Margaret Marion Fuss.
In Bruce's spare time he enjoyed playing tennis, as well as watching his children play tennis; fishing for muskies; trips with close friends to the Keys; attending services at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church; mission trips to Haiti to perform surgeries for women without access to medical care; visiting his Donahoe in-law's Georgia farm; annual beach vacations with his family to St. George Island.
Additionally, Bruce's fascination with machines and buildings-- how they were designed, their interworkings, and repair -- was useful in the restoration of his parent's 1920's historical home he inherited. From 2000 and into the future, following his vision, the work will continue.
Finally, he was a member of the Huntington Kennel Club. His dogs were an important part of his life, and as such he supported the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control Shelter.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from Noon until 2 p.m. at Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. at the church by The Rev. Annette Carper.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Ratcliff Family Scholarship at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (checks payable to the MU Foundation and returned to Linda Holmes at 1600 Medical Center Drive, Huntington, WV, 25701). Donations may also be made to the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control Shelter and the Johnson United Memorial Methodist Church.

The best Doctor ever. I had my baby during the 1977 hospital strike and we sure had a time that night in labor and delivery! Later he delivered my three Grand Daughters and what a joy he was. That laugh and leaning back in his chair. The world is a little dimmer but I know heaven got brighter. Prayers for his family.

Dr Ratcliff became my Dr when I became high risk pregnancy in 1988. He and Dr Carolyn Clark made sure I got the care I needed and my unborn son as well.
I was blessed that when I went in to labor he came to the hospital to deliver my son and he made sure my baby was healthy .
May God be with you all.

Dr Bruce delivered all three of my babies, and both my grandchildren. There are not enough eloquent, and wonderful words to describe my admiration, love, and gratitude, for him. He was a beautiful human, the best Doc ever, and his laugh, which was so deep and genuine, had healing powers all on its own! He will be sadly missed. To his family,
May His Memory be a blessing.
You are all in my prayers.
