Carlos Cartwright Obituary

CARLOS JAMES CARTWRIGHT, "JIM", 93 of Jonesborough, Tennessee, formerly of Huntington, West Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, the 8th of January 2025, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Boomer, WV, and was the son of the late Oscar Clyde and Mildred Edna Michael Cartwright.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Lula M Cartwright of Jonesborough, TN, and their two sons, James Brian Cartwright (Anna) and Billy Ray Cartwright of Jonesborough, TN, as well as his grandson, Brian Michael Cartwright of Johnson City, TN. He is survived by a host of nephews and nieces that he loved and cherished. He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Raymound, Victor, Leland and Oscar Cartwright; and three sisters, Melba Jean Cartwright, Loucelle Hammond, and Wilhelmenia Ashworth.
Jim was a graduate of Huntington East High School in 1950. Soon after, he publicly confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His plan was to become a pastor and follow his four older brothers into the military. He enlisted and served four years in the United States Navy, where he did payroll on a naval ship. After being honorably discharged, Jim served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He then returned to Huntington, WV, and while working on his degree, was employed by Stewart's Hot Dogs. He graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor's degree. He began working for the Veterans Administration in Huntington, WV. While still in West Virginia, Jim met and married Lula M. Hager Cartwright. They had two sons, Brian and Billy. Jim loved the VA and was later transferred to the Washington, DC, Veterans Administration where he worked for five years. In 1973, he transferred to the Mountain Home VA in Johnson City, TN. He worked as chief fiscal officer until his retirement.
Jim loved living in Jonesborough. He enjoyed spending time with Lula and the boys. He loved the outdoors. He was a Little League baseball coach, loved fishing, and spending time in his garden. Being born on Halloween, Jim loved seeing the kids come to the door and singing Happy Birthday to him.
As Jim's health declined, he wanted to go home. He missed his mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. Jim kept his faith and his integrity throughout his life. His smile was infectious. He will be missed dearly! He made it home!
The family would like to thank the Mountain Home Veterans Administration and the doctors for his continued care throughout his life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The BrightFocus Foundation for Alzheimer's disease Research (BrightFocus.org" target="_new" rel="nofollow">donate.BrightFocus.org)
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2025, at Henson and Kitchen Mortuary and Cremation Services, 6357 E. Pea Ridge Rd., Huntington, WV, near Barboursville with Rev. David Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, WV. Military Honors will be conducted by the Marine Corps League.
