I first met Don in 1982, both of us were members of Grace Gospel Church, and along with several others we were part of a construction missions trip to Haiti. He was some 30 years my senior, but we got along great and stayed in Haiti an extra week, finishing up projects after the rest of the team had returned home. I don't know if it was that trip that put missions deep into Don's heart (as it did in mine) but he became sort of the "missionary's advocate" from that time on and for a season served as head of the missionary committee at GGC. He was definitely an advocate for me as I pursued missionary service in those years!
My family and I have been out of the Tri-State area for nearly 30 years, but my in-laws (also in heaven now) developed a friendship with Don as they frequented the Sam's Club where he worked. Often, they would mention seeing him and comment on his friendliness and how much they liked him.
I rejoice that he is now in "joy unspeakable" but also call to the Lord for grace to be poured on Joyce and his family. The loss is never easy but our separation is only temporary when we know Christ!

In 1967 I met Don at the Air Force recruiting office in Huntington WV when I was considering enlistment. Don's easy manner, honest answers and pleasant personality convinced me to join. Never did I dream that I would run into him 45 years later when one day I walked into Sams Club and there he was by the door checking passes. His face and voice were so familiar and I struck up a conversation with him. When he told me he was retired Air Force I ask if he had ever been a recruiter. When he said yes I knew immediately this was the man that signed me up. We talked for a long time and each time I went back to Sams Club I looked for him. This was a very decent kind man whom I will never forget!!
