James Clayton Obituary

JAMES "JIM" LOUIS CLAYTON, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 18, 2025, at the age of 69.
Born on October 22, 1955, in Huntington, West Virginia, Jim dedicated his life to teaching, coaching, and mentoring others both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Anne; his daughter, Elizabeth; his son, Wes, and his wife Kayla; and his two cherished granddaughters, Vera and Heidi, who lovingly knew him as "Pop Pop." He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine (Alan) Morrison and Mary Clayton. He will also be deeply missed by his faithful dogs and closest companions, Alfie and JJ, as well as countless students, athletes, friends, and colleagues whose lives were shaped by his encouragement and example.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy Clayton, Jr. and Jane Sedinger Clayton.
Jim graduated from Huntington High School in 1974, where he excelled both on the baseball field and the basketball court. He went on to earn a degree in education from West Virginia Institute of Technology, preparing him for his lifelong career in teaching and coaching. While at Tech, he also played basketball for the Golden Bears, further fueling the passion for the game that would define much of his life.
Jim spent over 35 years as a classroom teacher with Cabell County Schools, serving at Huntington East High School, Huntington High School, and Cabell Midland High School. He coached at Huntington East for nearly a decade and later played a key role as an assistant coach in leading Huntington High School to three consecutive state championships. He inspired students and athletes alike with his passion, positivity, and wisdom always striving to bring out the best in those around him.
In 1992, Jim founded Sports City U, the nation's first private basketball academy, continuing to share his love of the game and of life. Jim also served as a national spokesperson and skills shooting coach for Nike, worked as a shooting consultant and coach for the NBA's New Jersey (now Brooklyn) Nets and the Portland Trail Blazers, and was a John Maxwell Certified Leadership Coach and motivational speaker, inspiring athletes and audiences alike with his insights and leadership philosophies.
Most recently, he reached a broader audience through his podcast, Shooting It Straight!, where he offered insights that extended well beyond basketball.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 says, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness."
Jim Clayton fought that fight daily in his own unique and original way. He leaves behind a legacy that reaches beyond his family and inspires countless others today and beyond.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, September 26 from 5 to 9 p.m. at New Baptist Church, 610 28th St. in Huntington. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at Christ Temple Church Saturday, September 27 at Noon with Pastor Kevin Shull officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter or the Cabell Huntington Hospital Foundation. Friends, former students, athletes, and all who were touched by Coach Clayton's life are invited to share their memories and stories. Those who wish to do so may call (304) 691-0075 and leave a voicemail to be collected and cherished by the family.
Coach Clayton's impact will continue through the love of his family, his friends, and the countless students and athletes whose lives he touched. His voice, laughter, and signature encouragement "BAM, Son!" asking us all to
Believe bigger,
Achieve louder, and
Motivate stronger.

Sad to read of Jimmy's illness and subsequent passing . This goes back 50 some years now while a young man like Jimmy in Huntington , whether it was while I was working at Olympic Pool or working out at the YMCA May building there was always a pickup basketball game going on and Jimmy Clayton was usually dominating the play but in a fun good spirited way . Jimmy was very talented , humorous, gregarious guy with great people skills who's life clearly had a positive effect on many. My condolences to his family during this difficult time.

I first met Coach Clayton during my sophomore year in high School at Huntington East in1983. I was in a Driver's Ed. class and our teacher, Mr. Mann was absent one day. Coach substituted for Mr. Mann and I was selected to be the driver. Mr. Clayton sat in the front passenger side of the car and with three other students in the back seat, off we went. Coach asked me to get over onto Third Avenue, head west, and be prepared to make a left hand turn down the road because we were going to Stewart's Hot Dogs. It was the period right before lunch so we all got excited. Everyone started talking about what they were going to order and all was well. We made our way up to 23rd or 24th Street and there I made that left hand turn. This was the first time I drove for Coach Clayton so I was a little nervous. Even back then he had a personality that was bigger than most and I really wanted to do a good job and I wanted him to like me. Heading South on 23rd or 24th Street put us on 5th avenue where I needed to make another left hand turn. Looking forward while stopped at a red light, I saw we only had a few feet to get across all four lanes. After getting across 5th Avenue, I would have to make a quick right hand turn to get into Stewart's parking lot. Right when I started into the left hand turn and was out in the middle of the road, a stray dog started to cross the street. I stopped right in front of that big red brick chemical factory and was blocking all four lanes of traffic. The dog stopped because it thought it was going to get hit by our car. All four lanes of traffic were held up because when I stopped the middle of the road for the dog, the red light turned green for the cars going East. I put the car in reverse to back out of the intersection but was getting yelled at by the three students because there was now another car right behind me waiting for me to get out of the way. Coach Clayton started yelling at me to get out of the intersection. Finally, I decided to honk the horn which caused the dog to move. I pulled further into the intersection during what was now a red light for me and quickly pulled into Stewarts. We came to a quick stop, and I placed the car in park. Everyone in the car was in a moment of anxious despair. Coach Clayton finished off the criticism with, "Boy wasn't that fun, NOT". He never asked me to drive again!...lol.

I and everyone I know loved and continues to love Coach Clayton. He has made a positive impact on many people, and we were blessed to have him in our lives! If there is a basketball court in heaven, that is where you will find him when you get there!

I knew Jimmy at Huntington High, and through the years since we are both Huntingtonians. He was always a fine person and a gentleman, and a great athlete. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I just wanted to share something very small. I'm one of many of students he knew in high school. Even if I didn't have him as a coach or a teacher he was always there when I needed someone to help me brighten my day or I needed a laugh or even a hug he was always there. He sure did have alot of students/ staff / and team mates that loved him very much. I pray over the family to have peace and comfort.
I send my prayers to all the family. See you on the other side coach.

Anne,Wes, and Liz I want to say how much I loved your father and husband, when he transferred to West Virginia Tech in 1976 he became my roommate two weeks after class started he took me under his wing and let me through my freshman year of college, he also became my big brother in the Sig Ep fraternity, we even went on spring break together, and Jimmy slept the whole way, his positive attitude rubbed off on me after about three months of continuous encouragement, we have maintained our lifelong friendship through sports, especially since Chase and Wes competed against each other in school, he also made me wear sports city U T-shirts in Beckley for advertising, God bless you all, and the world has lost a treasure
