Riley Stone Obituary

RILEY V. STONE, 98, went to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. He was born September 12, 1924, in Red Jacket, W.Va., to the late Riley and Maysha Bondurant Stone. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carlton, Jack and Gerald Stone and a sister, Maysha Arlene Stone Melton.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret "Margie" Kitka Stone, a daughter Carolyn Stone of Tampa, Fla., and a son John Stone (Debbie) of Huntington, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Meghan Miller (Troy) of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Alex Stone of Huntington, W.Va., and one great-grandson, Miles Riley Miller of Gallipolis, Ohio.
Riley graduated from Magnolia High School in Matewan, W.Va., and enlisted in the Air Force at age eighteen. While in the Air Force, he completed his Associate degree in business at the South Dakota State College. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 390th bomb group and stationed in England.
After the end of WW II, he returned to Mingo County and worked as a coal miner. He and Margie were married and moved to Huntington, and he began his employment at Anderson-Newcomb Co., eventually becoming the main floor manager. He left Anderson-Newcomb to accept a position at the Cabell County courthouse as a deputy circuit clerk, later becoming the circuit court clerk, for a span of 28 years.
He was a follower of Christ and a faithful member of the Highlawn Presbyterian Church for many years. Riley was a wonderful example of how we should treat one another, and he will be greatly missed. "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:23
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highlawn Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Huntington, or the charity of your choice.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, July 17, at Chapman's Mortuary, with the service and military honors to follow. Pastor Sharon Bell will be officiating.

I had the pleasure of seeing Riley almost everyday during the years of 1982-1988. I worked at the Veterans Memorial post office and not a day passed that I didn't see him with a smile on his face and an encouraging word. I've thought of him often over the years, there weren't many good memories from that time but I could always count on a kind word from Riley. Rest well friend.

Riley was a patient of mine while I was in Huntington. He was a true gentleman and the love of Christ was so apparent in him. What a gentle soul. He was a joy to visit with and will definitely be missed but I am so happy that he is now with his savior. Thank you, Riley, for having touched so many souls in such a kind loving way.
