Thomas Scott Obituary

DR. THOMAS FRANCIS SCOTT, a distinguished physician, dedicated community servant, and cherished family member, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the age of 91.
Born in Huntington, West Virginia on August 4, 1932, Dr. Scott was the son of the late Dr. Francis Axtell Scott and Catherine Elizabeth Tompkins Scott. He attended Deerfield Academy, followed by Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1954, and the University of Michigan Medical School, from which he earned his medical degree in 1958. After completing his Orthopedic Residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Scott returned to Huntington in 1963 to join his father at what would become Scott Orthopedic Center.
Dr. Scott's medical career spanned over five decades during which he became a pillar of support for not only the people of Huntington and the Tri-State area but also those in need throughout Southern West Virginia. He had an unwavering commitment to patient care; recruiting orthopedic specialists to the area, growing his practice, and even making "house calls."
Dr. Scott was a major supporter of the formation of Marshall University School of Medicine. He mentored countless students throughout the years. His dedication extended beyond local borders; he became the director of the West Virginia Crippled Children's Clinic in the mid-1960s, and later became the Medical Director of the West Virginia Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) Program and a member of CSHCN Advisory Committee. He volunteered in medical missions at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti annually for over 20 years.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Scott was a devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher, was involved in the Cridlin Food and Clothing Pantry, and faithfully served whenever called upon. He served on the boards of Cammack Children's Center, the Huntington Museum of Art, and the Huntington Clinical Foundation. He served as president of the Cabell County Medical Society and held several positions within state, regional, and national orthopedic associations. Dr. Scott served in the West Virginia State Senate from 1994-1998.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Scott found joy at his summer home in Friendship, Maine, where he gathered annually with his family and friends.
Dr. Scott is remembered for his faith, love for family and friends, and commitment to medicine and community service. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne Logan Scott, his son John Andrew Scott, and his grandson Conor Thomas Scott. He is survived by his children Patricia Holbrook (John), Thomas Scott Jr., Elizabeth VanderPloeg (Douglas), and Joseph Scott; his stepchildren, Dain Price (Angela) and Stephanie Wilson (Robert); his grandchildren, Amy Turk, Austin Holbrook, Hayden Holbrook, Jessica Stamper, Jillian Scott, Andrew VanderPloeg, Michael VanderPloeg, Benjamin Scott, Gregory Scott, Braddick Olmack, Thomas Price, Price Wilson, Bennett Wilson, and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his only brother, James Elliott Scott (Nina), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service celebrating Dr. Scott's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington, WV.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, Cora Lykins, Sue Brumfield, Jacki Schaffer, Jill Cook, and Momin Noor, for their compassionate support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Francis A. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund for Medical Education at the Marshall University Foundation, 519 John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25703, or to Trinity Episcopal Church, 520 11th Street, Huntington, WV 25701. To the family of Dr. Tom Scott, I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss, especially to you, Patty. Dr. Scott and my father, Tom Owens, were great friends for years, so we spent a lot of time with your family as children. I remember your father as being on of the kindest, most caring, and selfless men I have ever met. May he RIP and may God guide you all through this time of sorrow and remembrance.

I never met Dr. Scott but I heard many stories about him from his son Dr. Thomas Scott Jr. It sounded lke he was a great guy. I can't believe he was doing house calls in this day and age. He must have really cared for his patients. His son looks very much like him. My condulances to his family.

Dr Scott´s personal encouragement to pursue a career in the practice of medicine, as he took the time and interest to do for so many, was instrumental in my becoming a physician.
Peace be with you and your family.

I was an orthopedic nurse at St Mary's for 26 years & cared for many of Dr Scott's patients. They all thought the world of him as did the nursing staff. Back in the early days of my career he would make grand rounds for any of us who could spare a few minutes to listen & learn from the master. He was always one of my favorite orthopedists. He was kind & treated us all with respect. Condolences to his family.

I remember Dr Scott coming to our house in Milton along with David Pancake and sitting under the walnut tree in our front yard and talking politics with my father and myself. He took a liking to an old log cabin we had on our farm so dad gave it to him. At dad´s funeral Tom came and paid his respects and he and I slipped off and talked for several minutes. Fond memories. The last time we spoke was when I was appointed to the County Planning Commission. Tom was a fine man always.

I had the privilege of doing some typing for Dr Scott; many fond memories with family in Maine and some of his childhood memories. Had several phone calls from him while I was undergoing chemotherapy. He was a friend and very special person. What a legacy he has left !!

As his medical secretary for ten years, I know firsthand the love and dedication Dr. Scott had for his patients, the community, and especially for children in underserved areas of the world. His trips to Haiti were filled with long days of standing on his feet doing surgery on small children to give them a better chance in life. Condolences to his family and friends. His presence was larger than life and he will be missed.
