Carl Reid Obituary

DECATUR -- Carl Allen Reid, 74, of Decatur died Sunday(May 25, 2003) in his home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes. Visitation was Wednesday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard.

Mr. Reid was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Fairfield, Ala., the son of Carl Redvers and Clytee Smith Reid. He grew up in Clay and Chickasaw counties in Mississippi. He was very proud of his Scot ancestry. He entered the military at age 17. He progressed from private to technical sergeant, obtained a Reserve commission, a regular commission, and retired as major after 24 years of service in the Air Force. He served from World War II through the Korean and Vietnam War. Mr. Reid was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Ribbon, Legion of Merit, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Ribbon along with many other ribbons. He was also awarded the Senior Missile Badge. He was an aircraft maintenance supervisor (jet fighter), aircraft maintenance officer, nuclear weapons officer, and missile combat crew commander (launch control officer, Atlas EICBM). At retirement, he was munitions squadron maintenance supervisor, 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, Bien Hoa Air Force Base in South Vietnam. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for 16 years for Allstate Insurance Co., retiring as Decatur District claim office property claims supervisor. He was also an avid golfer and bowler. He married Bernice Henderson in May 1949 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Surviving are his wife; sons, Michael and William of Decatur; sister, Barbara Jones of Panama City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and two sons.

Carl was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
