Charlotte Lockhart Obituary

NIANTIC - Charlotte F. Lockhart, educator, author and always a teacher, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2006, in Ocala, FL, at the age of 92. After retiring as the principal of Niantic-Harristown Elementary School in 1972, Charlotte entered another facet of her life by becoming an educational consultant, and most importantly, an author. She developed and wrote a program called, Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself. She and her beloved husband, Jim, traveled the nation as well as the world, so that Charlotte could teach teachers, parents, children and illiterate adults that they too could learn to read. Playing off of the TV show at the time, she truly became the "Biphonic Woman" to her loyal and appreciative students of all ages. She continued to teach her program well into her 80's. The successful program is now under the watchful eye of the corporation that she sold it to a few years ago. In addition to being an educator for more than 60 years, Charlotte is also a veteran, having served in the WAVES during WWII. Charlotte is the daughter of Bert and Martha Faris of Niantic, IL. She was married to Dean Butterfield and then to James W. Lockhart. Both preceded her in death, along with her parents and sisters Madeline McDonald of Arthur and Eleanor Duncan of Harristown. Surviving her are son David Butterfield of Ocala, Ann Steinmetz of Lindenhurst, IL, and step-daughters Judy Cook of Brookline, NH and Nancy Newport of Gainesville, FL. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 17, at the Niantic Christian Church, 270 North Broadway, Niantic, IL 62551. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 A.M. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery. Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Messages of condolence may be directed to the family via email at www.dawson-wikoff.com Obituary written by family members. Online guest book at www.legacy.com/herald-review/Obituaries.asp

To the family of Mrs. Lockhart,

My prayers are with you on the loss of your Mother. I knew her as Mrs. Butterfield. She was such a fine lady and a wonderful principal. I had the pleasure of knowing her all through grade school, and in 1972, I was a senior office helper for her and Mrs. Doss. She always had a kind word and a warm hug when you needed it. I have thought of her over the years, and did finally get her address a few years back. Our class of '72 invited her to attend our 30th class reunion as guest of honor, but due to illness, she declined. Once again, I am sorry for your loss.

Charlotte was my "Angel from God". She literally SAVED my family by teaching my son to spell, read, have a positive attitude, have confidence, and try so very hard to please her when he was in her classroom at her home here in Decatur. We brought Bobby to Mrs. Lockhart for private tutoring and he learned so very much as I did as well, and not just phonics! Our lives are so much better for having this wonderful woman come in our lives and we Love her so much for her unselfish giving of herself to helping others. May God Bless your family at this time. She will be missed by so many.

Charlotte was an exceptional woman, teacher, administrator and contributed greatly to educational process. I was a fellow teacher with her and she was principal during the time our children went to grade school. She enjoyed a long and richly experienced life and will be missed. Please know we care.

Dear David and Ann;

Don and I want to give our deepest sympathy to both of you in the loss of your mother. I just lost my mother and it is still hard to realize she is gone.

Your mother was the first principal under which I taught. I can still hear her say to me when she found out I was expecting our first child, "you are not going to put on maternity clothes are you?". She has certainly had a long and full life.

The best to you both.
