Memories and Condolences
for G. Locke

Not sure what to say?

September 15, 2009

Dear Locke Family,

Sixteen years ago this month, I began my career as a speech pathologist at DMH. I was quite nervous as I began my career performing my first videoswallow studies with Dr. G. R. Locke. I soon discovered that he was one of the most considerate and compassionate physicians I would ever have the opportunity to work with. He not only put his patients at ease, he put me at ease as well. His hearty laugh diffused anxiety on multiple occasions for the patient and for me; he made drinking barium fun! (Ok, maybe that was a stretch!) What an honor and privilege to have crossed his professional path. My sincere sympathy to your family.

Blessings,

Vicki Burke, Speech Pathologist, DMH

Dear Judy and all of the Lockes,

Our hearts go out to you and your family during this time of loss. While I am still at our summer home on Lake George, I just learned from Mom this morning about Dick's death, as she is in Boca Grande for a few days before going up to the Glenridge. I will always remember Dick's great smile and laugh, seeing you two walking so happily on the beach, and looking out on the beach from our lanai and seeing all the Lockes seated together under the umbrellas and enjoying each other greatly. He led an extraordinary life, and his impact in the medical world as well as on DePauw University will be a huge legacy for many years ahead. We will surely miss him, as will so many, and we send our love and sympathy your way. We hope to see you this winter or spring in Boca Grande.

Judy and the boys, Like everyone else I was shocked to receive the notification of Dick's death. I spent the summer in Colorado and New Mexico and just got the news a few days ago. As we go through life we seem to occasionally have fleeting memories of times past. I had frequent memories of all of you and even often had dreams of being with Dick at meetings and elsewhere. In fact I had one just recently that he and I were together at one of the hospitals in Cedar Rapids. Sometimes you and the boys were in the dreams also. I have so many fond memories of the times we were together in Iowa City back in the early 60s. Dick and I had a lot of fun in those days. It's too bad that the paths we take often separate us from one another but it is fortunate that the good memories continue to hold us together forever.
I will continue to think of you often. Give my best to the boys.

To the Locke Family: I just tonight got into my face book, and saw all the notes. I have been sharing facebook with Mike and was so delighted that we connected. I was so stunned to hear the news of Dick. Mike was just telling me, not long ago, that he had spent the weekend with you at your summer home. We, the Miller Family, extend our deepest symphathy to each and everyone of you. My, where does the time go, we have been gone from Decatur since 1981
and we still remember all the fun times we had with you guys and the boys. Dinners, taking turns watching the kids, especially Mike and Brent. The great times during the winter on the lake skating....then hot chocolate at your house......you guys always had your home open to all of us. What fun we had. I remembered Dick always agreed to whatever you wanted to do.......a great guy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Marvin and Claudia Miller, Brent and family , Chad and family.

Judy and Clan:
Just found out tonight from Mike and extend my sympathy to the whole gang. Dick lives on as the role model for the boys and now grandchildren. He represents all of the good parts of medicine, quality, compassion and gentle leadership, even to errant surgeons such as myself. None of us escaped his most positive influence.
Please be well.

Dear Mrs. Locke and Family,
The following quote reminds me of our wonferful Dr. Locke.
Accept the challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.---George S. Patton
As I reflect on the life and accomplishments of your beloved husband, father and grandfather, I know that he left a remarkable impression embedded in the hearts of all who knew him. He demonstrated wisdom, compassion, and fortitude in all that he strived to achieve. He had a jovial, loving and kind spirit which permeated through his family and work. I will always remember his smiling face and the chuckle in his voice. Just like those cold winter days of skating on the pond and then seeking the warmth of the fire, your husband and father provided the same warmth and comfort to all. We honor his victory of life and will cherish and treasure the challenges he conquered. He truly mastered the best game of golf and life. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May you feel God's love at this time.

Dear Mrs. Locke & Family,
In 1969 at the age of 29 we found out my husband had cancer. We had two little girls 2 and 4. We were sent to Dr. Locke for cobalt treatments. After a few months the cancer spread and he had to have Chemo. Dr. Locke personally injected the chemo in his office so we would only have to pay for the medicine. This was just one of the many kind and above the line of duty things he did for us in the 17 months my husband lived. He was one of a kind in my family's eyes and we have never forgotten him.

With sympathy for your loss,
Phyllis Posteher, Pana

May the hands of God reach down and carry your family through this difficult time. I have seen what a loss of a father can do to a child, no matter their age; and the emptiness that fills the mourning spouses heart, I feel with each beat.

You are fortunate that your loved one touched so many lives with his kindness and intelligence. His hope and determination to fight the evils of cancer, gave so many people the gift of life, and belief that life was possible. This gift will never die.

When I think of Doctor Richard Locke, I think of strength, hope, God's hands, lived outside the box, and will always be alive in the hearts of all!

My family sends it's tears, hugs, laughter of remembering, and memory of a man that will live forever in the lives he touched.

God Bless,

What a loving role model he was for not only his wonderful boys but for all the other kids in the neighborhood. When I think of Dick, I think of him on a cold winter morning putting up the flag to let all the neighborhood kids know that the lake was safe to skate on. What a wonderful man, Doctor, husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend. He will be missed and was loved by many of us. My prayers are with all of you. Lots of love and hugs! Carol Foster
