James Alling Obituary
August 10, 1936 - November 8, 2025
James "Jim" Winslow Alling passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Jim was born in Evanston, Ill., to William and Ruth Alling. Jim met Susan Armstrong while at Indiana University. They were married 67 years.
They moved to Decatur, Ill., when Jim began his legal career at Samuels, Miller. When Jim retired they moved to Bloomington, Ind., to enjoy IU sports, music and other events.
They traveled extensively and spent time as Park Ranger volunteers in both Oregon and Minnesota while staying devoted to their family. Having completed the Boston Marathon, Jim remained an avid runner and continued to enjoy long walks on his favorite trail until his final days.
He faced the challenges of Alzheimer's with grace. He will be missed, especially by his surviving family, including his wife, Sue; his children, Cathy (Mike Brown), Jim (Annette Alling), John (Lynn Alling); his six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on November 14, 2025, at St. Paul's Catholic Center in Bloomington, Ind., at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., also at the church. A reception will follow the Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Special Olympics or the Alzheimer's Association.
