John D. Hawkins

September 29, 1957 - January 29, 2025

DECATUR - John D. Hawkins 67, of Decatur, IL passed away at 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, in Decatur Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. John was born September 29, 1957, in Decatur, IL the son of Elmer C. and Virginia R. (Doherty) Hawkins. He married Laura Spain on December 6, 2018. He graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1975 and began working for Robbies in 1978. After several years there in Decatur and Springfield he moved to Texas to work for Luby's Cafeteria. He managed cafeterias in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Port Arthur, Albuquerque, NM, and Mesa, AZ. He returned to Decatur and bought Robbie's, eventually opening Doherty's Pub and Pins with his brothers. He was a member of South Side Country Club, the Son's of the American Legion and FISH. John always had a warm smile and big hug for his friends. He was very proud of his daughters and adored his grandchildren. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Laura Hawkins of Decatur; daughters: Jordan Spreitzer (Bryan) of Springfield, IL, Brynn Hansen (Daniel) of Mt. Zion, and Dyllan Mazzanti (Stephen) of Dallas, TX; siblings: Geri McGrath (Tom) of Decatur, Amy Stice (Bill) of Chatham, Bob Hawkins (Susie) of Mt. Zion, and Jeff Hawkins (Mona) of Decatur; grandchildren: Ethan, Chace, Erin, Griffin, Gage, Mace, Sabine, and Thomas. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday, February 7, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at Calvert & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion. Inurnment will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Hall at Five Twenty (KC Hall) 520 E. North Street, Decatur, IL. Messages of condolence may be shared with the family at Calvertmemorial.com. John was preceded by his parents.

Our deepest condolences to John´s family. Dohertys is our favorite place to eat and we were always met with smiles and warm greetings as friends. Decatur has lost a great champion of the restaurant business. He will be greatly missed.
