ADA ISASI-DIAZ Obituary

ISASI-DIAZ, DR. ADA MARIA, died on May 13, 2012 at age 69 after having received the Holy Sacraments. Ada Maria was born in La Habana, Cuba, on March 22, 1943, the daughter of Josefina Diaz de Isasi and Domingo G. Isasi-Battle (RIP 2005). She lived her youth in Cuba, studying in La Habana where she graduated from Merici Academy in 1960. She moved to the United States in 1960 with her family, and soon after entered the Ursuline novitiate in Santa Rosa, California. After finishing studies at New Rochelle College, NY, Ada was sent to Lima, Peru by the order to work among the poor in the "barriada de Miramar". There she became passionate in caring for the dispossessed and building the "kin-dom" of God. After leaving the convent in 1969, she lived with her family in the United States. Realizing that she had a continued calling to be an educator and a voice for the underprivileged, Ada Maria moved in 1975 to Rochester, New York where she served in two inner city parishes and became involved in the Women's Ordination Conference (WOC). Ada Maria earned a Masters of Divinity and a Doctorate in Theology from Union Theological Seminary, in New York City in 1990. At Union, she started her lifelong engagement and leadership in the community of Liberation Theologians. Continuing her commitment to women's issues, she coined the term Mujerista theology to make explicit the Latina voice in Feminist Liberation Theology. In 1991, Ada Maria became a professor of Ethics and Theology at Drew University, Madison, NJ from where she retired in 2009. Students were very fond of her and described her as someone who was a demanding teacher, fair, honest and passionate. While at Drew University, she co- founded the Hispanic Theological Institute for training of Hispanic Theologians. She was a prolific writer, completing eight books, and many scholarly articles. Her seminal work was Mujerista Theology: a Theology for the 21st Century. She is survived and remembered by her mother, sisters, and brother, brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law, her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews, friends and the community of women she mentored and inspired. Sometime in the mid to late 90s, Ada-Maria came to visit my home and studio after becoming aware of my artistic interpretations of our beloved Virgen de Guadalupe as a living mujer Mexicana en todas las etapas de su vida.
At the time of her visit, our nieces Xitlaly and Xochitl were visiting my wife Mimi and me, from their home in la Sierra Tarahumara de Chihuahua; and Ada-Maria correctly sized them up as mujeristas, powerful and talented, and capable of anything. She spoke encouragingly to my nieces and they, in turn, have become great educators and very strong women with deep self-confidence, always on the side of the poor and the struggling.
I was blessed by Ada-Maria's interest in, awareness of, and support of my artwork - especially my interpretations of the Virgen de Guadalupe; and I appreciated getting to learn more about Mujerista Theology - and the fact that I was already "doing" it on some level.
I am so deeply sorry that we never crossed paths again, and that I did not keep in touch.
But I have a very storng visual memory of that summer afternoon we spent all together seated in our garden behind my studio.
Much love and power. Adelante!

A great influence in my understanding of the true value of the lives of women struggling in the midst of poverty, loneliness, devalued human beings. And the call of Christ to share and help lift them in their daily sufferings. Wonderful writer, inspiring Ursuline to the core and Mariciana!

I first heard Ada preach at Marjorie Tuite memorial service and her passion and boldness was astounding! I knew I wanted to know her. Never would I guess that later I would work with her in Church Women United. We did training workshops for women all over the country . She was incredibly able to communicate with middle class white women in a powerful way about her love for poor Hispanic women. I will always consider it such an honor that she preached at my ordination in the Presbyterian church when she couldn't be ordained in her own catholic church. I will try to carry on the struggle in her name and in her loving memory. I wish I could be with all you sisters in spirit. I am in central Pa serving a church . One funmemory was a camping trip we went on with several women ! What fun she was and so bright and hard, hard working!!!!

I'll keep in my heart the times we shared on our Drew trip to Ghana. I have some great pictures. Our last communication was in Dec. when we all pitched in to send through Ada a love donation to a church we visited in Ghana. She touched many hearts and she will be missed.

Ada was truly a feminist/mujerista pioneer. She was feisty, critical, but always a generous spirit to her gringa hermanas. Our paths crossed many times and I was always richer for the meetings. Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM, Past-President, Catholic Theological Society of America.

We met when we were both young Ursulines completing our studies at the College of New Rochelle. Ada Maria's exuberance, spontaneity and brilliance delighted me from the beginning. She was a great gift to us all and to the Church in the Americas. Now married, I met her again these last weeks as I work at Memorial Sloan Kettering in the Chaplaincy department. Her light shone brilliantly on me again. It will not be extinguished. Mary Ellen Foster McEvily
