Andres Rivero Collado

July 18, 1936 - October 14, 2023

Miami, Florida - Andrés Rivero Collado was born to Isabel and Andrés Rivero Agüero in La Habana, Cuba on July 18, 1936. From early on, he started writing professionally. He studied law at the University of St. Thomas de Villanueva. From 1960, he lived in Miami because of the Castro dictatorship.

His principal vocation was always journalism and narrative. In 1961, he published the first novel of the Cuban Exile, Enterrado Vivo. He wrote more than 20 books of fiction and contributed to many periodicals, including Todo, Replica, Tiempo, Gente, Criterios, Diario las Americas, and The Miami Herald. He was also the first writer in Spanish to win a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

He was a dedicated family man and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pilar, his children, Teresa, Juan Carlos, and Andrés, his grandchildren, Georgia, Nicolás and Andrés, and his sister, Rosa. We miss him.

I only had the opportunity to know Andres thru phone conversations, but just from those I could tell the kind of person he was. Always so pleasant, we exchanged many personal stories on our "business" calls. I am very saddened to hear of his passing, but consider myself fortunate to have had time with him, however brief. My sincerest condolences to the family, I know you lost someone very special. Godspeed my friend.
