Christopher Cottie Obituary

COTTIE, CHRISTOPHER WARREN, passed away 6/6/04. He was born in Tampa. He attended Coconut Grove Elementary, then moved to Miami Beach in the late 60's when he began to play drums. By the time he graduated from Miami Beach High in '71 he had already played in several garage bands, including ZOUNDS. Over the next several years, he played in numerous bands before relocating to Nova Scotia. During the 70's he was the drummer for Icarus , a band that became popular throughout Nova Scotia. In the 70's Chris became the tour drummer for David Allen Coe ("Take This Job and Shove it") before returning to Miami's music scene as drummer for "The Eat". During the mid-80's , he went back to school earning his Bachelors from Barry University and obtaining a teaching certificate. He undertook a significant change of direction, shifting from rock & roll drummer to educator. He later earned a Master's from St. Thomas University in counseling and was employed as a Guidance Counselor at Robert Renick Educational Center. Having a day job didn't weaken his love for music - he played locally with a band called "The Hell Razors". Chris touched many lives through his music, his second career as a teacher, as a friend, colleague, lover and mentor. He was a totally devoted son to his mother Johanna, who predeceased him 7 months ago. Chris was also a spirited UM and Dolphins fan, known forever to the Upper Deck Crazies as "Thank You Jesus". Chris loved animals, dogs especially, and was always ready to adopt a stray or abandoned dog. Chris is survived by the love of his life Susan Holloway, a wide circle of friends, and his dogs Dagwood, Coco & his cat Squeaky. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Pet Rescue, 3440 NW 191 St., Miami, FL 33056 Arrangements were made by Wintter Funeral home in Hollywood. A memorial service will be held at Two Chefs restaurant, Saturday 6/19 at 5pm 8287 S Dixie Hwy, 67 Ave (Ludlum Rd) & US 1 (305) 663-2100. Charismatic, wicked sense of humor, kind, clever, a loyal friend, a lover of animals. You had an incredibly wide range of friends, many of whom you knew for decades.

You always had a smile on your face that suggested that you were putting a joke over on the world.

Chris, you touched so many people through your music and your later career as an educator. I was very lucky to count you as a friend.

I met "Mr. Cottie" while working at Hialeah Middle School and always enjoyed talking with him. I had the chance to hear him play the drums both at school and at his home studio and was blown away by his technique as well as how easy he made it look.

I am very sadenned to hear of his passing and send my condolences to his loved ones.

Chris, rock on. See you on the flip side.

I have known Chris since I was 9 years old. I always thought he was as intimidating as a "Grizzly Bear". Over the years I have come to find that he had the personality of a "Teddy Bear".

Recently Chris had reached out to me regarding his illness and we became closer and better friends.

I saw Chris on Thursday before his passing and his thoughts were only positive about the future and spoke about his first love playing his drums and the hope he had of picking up the "sticks" once again. I miss Chris and will never forget him as being my friend.
