Dolores Nuñez-Portuondo Obituary

Loly, a devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother and active philanthropist has passed away. Shortly after celebrating her quinceañera in her native Havana, Cuba, she would lose her father to kidney disease. Within a year of losing her father, she and her 19-year-old sister would flee Cuba's brutal dictatorship. Her mother would be able to join them several months later and they would settle in Miami, FL. Having left a successful entrepreneurial life in Cuba, they would start over in Miami with nothing more than some jewelry that her mother would be able to "smuggle" out. Loly would get a job as an administrative assistant at the CIA where she would meet her eventual husband of over 50 years, who had also fled Cuba, Ricardo Nuñez-Portuondo. Loly and Ricardo would work hard to realize the American dream, making it available to their children and grandchildren. Loly would not only model for her children the values of hard work, empathy and care, but she would also demonstrate the values of having strong faith and giving back. Loly was a regular at St. Theresa (Little Flower) Catholic Church and volunteered with numerous organizations including Mercy Hospital in Miami and the American Cancer Society. She also loved her adopted country and would always stand at attention, even when by herself, upon hearing the Star-Spangled Banner. Her greatest accomplishment was her family, including her beloved husband, Ricardo, as well as her three sons, Ricardo Jr., Emilio and Eduardo, her daughters-in-law, Carmen, Glenda and Linda, and her seven grandchildren Ricky, Alessandra, Carolina, Patricia, Daniel, Sofia and Lucas, whom she adored. Loly was predeceased by her husband, Ricardo, and survived by her sister Flory Maldonado de Gonzalez, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Loly will be missed by her family and the many people whose lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cure Alzheimer's Fund or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. May she Rest in Peace.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5 at St Raymond of Peñafort Catholic Church (3475 SW 17th St, Miami FL 33145).
