Edward Davis Obituary

DAVIS, JUDGE EDWARD B. February 10, 1933-May 24, 2010 Judge Edward B. (Ned) Davis passed away on May 24, 2010. Ned was born in West Palm Beach, Florida where he distinguished himself on the baseball diamond, basketball court and gridiron. He received Allstate honors in baseball, All District honors in basketball and was the first person selected to the All Southern Football Team as a high school sophomore. He became affectionately known as the "Boomer" because of his athletic skills. As a result of his athletic and academic prowess, he was offered scholarships to a number of colleges. He was offered the largest bonus ever awarded a high school athlete at that time in the State of Florida to sign with the Detroit Tigers to play professional baseball. Ned's professional baseball career was interrupted because of the Korean War. He served in the United States Army for two years. Upon discharge, he returned to the Detroit Tigers, until injuries cut his career short. Judge Davis then enrolled in the University of Florida. Prior to obtaining his bachelor's degree in Economics, Judge Davis was allowed to start law school as a Korean War Veteran. During his time at the University of Florida, he enjoyed a number of honors and leadership positions including President of the Young Democrats, President of the Senior Class, President of ATO social fraternity and was selected for membership in Florida Blue Key. While in school, Ned met the love of his life, Pat, and they married in 1958. They have three children, Diana, Traci and Ned. After graduation from the University of Florida College of Law in 1960, he attended New York University where he received a Masters of Law in Taxation in 1961. He returned to Miami and joined the law firm of Smathers, Thompson and Dyer. In 1962, he was a founding partner of the law firm of High, Stack and Davis. In 1979, he was appointed by President Carter to the federal bench. Later, he became Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He retired from the bench on June 30, 2000. After his retirement from the Court, Ned accepted a position with the Miami law firm of Akerman Senterfitt. While at the firm, he devoted his attention to mediation and arbitration, but more than that, he provided valuable insight and guidance to members of the firm. He was an incredibly talented and brilliant attorney and judge who was respected throughout the legal community. He was also involved in many charitable causes and has received many honors. Just a few of the awards he received were the David W. Dyer Professionalism Award, Jurisprudence Award, Lifetime Achievement Award (Miami Jewish Federation) the Gerald Kogan Judicial Distinction Award and Coral Gables Bar Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Selfless, compassionate, caring, bright and kind -- he treated everyone with respect. He had a great sense of humor and zest for life. He devoted himself to his family and was loyal to his friends. His good nature, his fairness and respect for others will be his legacy. Judg e Davis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pat, three children (Diana and husband Ian, Ned and wife Anne and Traci), five grandchildren (Jennifer, Brian, Ashley, Penn, and Harper), and two great-grandchildren (Trey and Cody). A gathering of friends will take place at the Biltmore Hotel, Granada Room, from 5 to 7 pm., Thursday, May 27, 2010. Parking will be available in the West Lot to the right of the hotel. Donations in his memory may be made to Lakewood Center, 8400 La Amistead Cove, Fern Park, Florida 32730; 407.331.7226. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

I heard about you in 1950, you were Palm Beach Counties greatest all around athlete. The first time I saw you play baseball you hit a fastball thrown by Herb Score on our high school team Lake Worth. The ball you hit landed on the football field-450+ feet. Herb later pitched for the Cleveland Indians. The next time I saw you was in 1958 when I was playing baseball for UM. I got to know you pretty well since then. All of those years we were friends you treated everyone with respect no matter what they did for a vocation. I saw a biography shoe once about buddy Burt Reynolds and Dick Howser, they both said you were their hero and a true refined southern gentleman. You always made people feel important. You had a lot of good friends and i feel very lucky to have been one of them. You meet a few great people in life, you will always be my hero.
God bless you

Dear Jennifer, granny and DI

I first met Pop, when I was 15 years old, I was terrified I thought I was going to be in big trouble, I had heard so many stories about Jens Pop and I thought I was going to be in trouble for leading his Granddaughter astray, boy how wrong was I, he gave me a great big smile and a big hug and told me it was great to finally meet me. My last memories of Pop was at Jens Wedding, I remember his speech was amazing and I was in awe of him, he looked after me at my best friend’s wedding before walking down the aisle I was more nervous than the bride and he reassured me I’d be fine, we had many a great chat and laugh that night and he wouldn’t let me have an empty glass in my hand.
Pop was/is Jennifer’s Star and he had a great influence in her life, she loved him with her whole heart and I know he has left a big void. Pop was one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met, he has an amazing soul and a heartwarming grin, and will be missed greatly!! I’m so honored that I got a chance to meet you.

Jennifer, granny and Di, all my love. xxx

I practiced before Judge Davis, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and then as a criminal defense lawyer. All of us who practiced before him, realized we practiced before greatness. He will be missed

Pat, Cris and I are in Europe with our children but are thinking of you and Ned. Ned was my best friend on the court and not only showed me how to be a good judge, but more importantly how to be a good person. Of course, many could say the same thing as he was everyone's best friend and mentor. How lucky we all were to know him. Fred Moreno

Dear Ned,
I am so sorry to hear of your father's death. He wrote a wonderful to Ricki Weyhe and me, acknowledging his appreciation for us as your teachers. We used that letter in every subsequent resume. You were certainly one of my most memorable students. You and Samir Tamer made those fabulous films in the gifted class. I remember going to Key Biscayne to make a film on the beach near the Rosenstiel School. You made a shark fin and dragged it on the beach to look like the shark was under it. You lathered another kid in Crisco. You bought liver and entrails to make a horror movie too. What great special effects! Your father had a wonderful sense of humor to complement teachers who allowed those shenanigans. He must have had a "bigger than life" personality, which is why I know that he will always be with you. My condolences to you and your family. I'd love to hear from you. To life! I was fortunate enough to intern with Judge Davis during law school. He was an outstanding mentor and one of the kindest, wisest and most intelligent people I have had the honor of knowing. He was also a gracious man with a keen wit that sparkled with humor. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family as I am sure he will be greatly missed by them as by so many others.
