I was just a kid knowing Mr Vining. He was a very close friend to my father Rodney Keep. Mr Vining- one of the Funniest friends my dad had, great sense of humor the man presented and by that you could tell his heart was full of joy as he loved making others around him feel just simply good inside. I'm sure you and my father are cracking jokes by the hour.

Thinking of you today. Found this trying to remember the date that you passed and thought I'd leave a note of gratitude. Pretty sure you would make fun of me you were good at that!)for doing this if you were here, but you are not...so I thought I'd tell you thanks for the Clark Bars. Unfortunately I still love chocolate and peanut butter! Loved visiting you in your office and seeing the box of Clark Bars in supply room. Peace Eddie. Thank you, Travis

A bit over 13 years later, I, Mason Mahaffey, thank each and every one of you for writing these memories. Stumbling upon this helps to give me a better picture of what my grandfather was like outside of my memory. He was an excellent grandfather and intelligent man, although I remember him in my own mind as a tad stern (I do not blame him; his sickness was quite serious when he came to stay with us). Rest in Peace Grandpa Ed, I love you and thank you for bringing our family together.

I have known Ed since I was a little girl. In fact my mother Minnie Lee worked for Sr. Mr Vining and his wife Pearl for many years. Ed was always there to help guide my family whenever needed. Some summers my mother would take my sisters and I to the Fla. Keys to spend the day with the Vining family. Ed will be greatly missed , as he was not only a friend, but a part of my family.

Valerie, Lisa and Brett:

As Valerie's longtime boyfriend during much of highschool and college, my memories of your dad are frozen in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Those were good times. No, they were great times. He was a man at the height of his career with a beautiful and loving family. I miss those times. Your dad could crack me up. The weekly hosing down of the driveway. The trapping of raccoons by the garbage cans. The frozen Snickers bars. He was a character.

Lisa, Valerie informs me that you did a great job caring for your father. The little sister I never had grew up well.

Brett, if you are ever in the area, please give me a call. I'd be happy to buy you a beer.

Valerie, please keep in touch.

I'm sorry I won't be down there on December 6th. My wife and I will be traveling with our two daughters that weekend.

God bless you all, and please give my best to your mother.

We share your sorrow and many happy memories of Sierra Circle. Your Dad bringing home the candy he'd stopped to pick up after work and sharing with all. Not to forget the frozen bananas and Snickers bars. The rides on the Model A car around the circle and all the kids running out to get a ride around the circle before a call went out and the rush to put it away. And possibly the cleanest driveway in all of the Gables, hosing it down every Sat. morning. And always a helping hand and the time to listen when a problem arose and needed advice, Ed was there.....as he'd promised Julian. A Great Friend and Wonderful Neighbor. We will greatly miss Ed. Sincerely, Hazel, Julian, Christopher, and Brett Arnold

TO all the Vining Family,

Merrill and Ed were a pair, when we

were together, they kept me laughing

And when he visited us the last

weeks before he was taken care of

so lovingly by lisa, he always

brought our dog Deuce a treat. He was a tough guy on the outside, but

very caring on the inside, but he

wanted all to think he was just

tough,I know better. He will be

missed. Merrill and I send our

prayers to the family and ask that

you remember the good times. They

will carry you through and give

you peace. Love, Peggy and Merrill

Ed Vining was a great family friend. He worked in the same building (Ingraham Building) with my Dad, knew my grandparents was in my Mom & Dad's wedding (Susan & Lester Johnson) and could go toe to toe with my grandmother, Eleanor Balfe! He made my father laugh, often and I enjoyed watching their friendship remain constant and mutual. Special prayers and praises to Lisa and her husband for the care and dignity they provided to Mr. Vining. I know their faith in God allowed them to get through this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Cathy and Doug Beam

Our last visit with Ed and son,Bret, was this summer(July) in Cashiers, NC. Ed was still very mobile though tired easily. We revisited all his old haunts-- High Hampton , Tommie's, Highlands, CCSV. It meant a lot to him to see these places again and it meant equally as much to us to be able to share the experience. Ed was a good friend to Ron and me. We will miss him sorely.

Steve Walker

November 13, 2003

Dear Vining family,

I got the call this morning from my father-in-law Jim Barker who shared the sad news.

I have many fond memories of "Fast Eddie". He brought a smile to my face often. I should say, often in the most irreverent ways, which made it even more hysterical (Church, weddings, etc.). It seems like yesterday that I would come over and hang out with the Vinings and listen to Ed’s jokes and bounce “Noooga” off my lap.

I know how much you all loved and admired him. I admired him too. The great thing is, whenever I think of Ed, I smile!

Love always,

Steve and Gaye Walker
