HENRY TAYLOR Obituary

TAYLOR, JR., HENRY HAMILTON, son of Henry Hamilton Taylor, Sr. and Nathalie Hayman Taylor, both of Key West, FL was born in Key West, FL on December 12, 1912. He graduated from the University of Florida and Law School in 1935, a member of R.O.T.C. and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He joined his father's law practice, McCaskill, Taylor & McCaskill, and argued his first case in front of the Florida Supreme Court in 1936. By 1938 he was practicing in both Miami and Key West. In Miami he worked on the legal aspects of building the Florida East Coast Railway station. In Key West he was elected special counsel to the city of Key West. In the early 1970's he successfully petitioned the Florida Supreme Court to allow exiled Cuban attorneys to apply to and become members of the Florida Bar, and as a result became an honorary member of the Cuban Bar Association. He was a member of the National Guard and was inducted into the army in 1941. As a Major he led his unit, stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, during World War II, completing his service on the Aleutian island of Attu. He remained a member of the army reserve and was again called to active duty to serve in the Korean War, as a Colonel. His unit, the Florida 712th Anti-Aircraft Gun battalion was one of the oldest in the State. After returning from the war, Henry started his own firm, Taylor, Brion, Buker, & Greene. For years he represented Pan American Construction Company, Calder Race Course, Tropical Park, Hialeah Race Course, Ernest Hemingway and later Hemingway's wife. An avid golfer in his later life, cited in Golf Digest as the "most improved amateur golfer" and a philanthropist at heart, Henry founded the Walter Hagen Foundation. President of the American Cancer Society in the early seventies, he helped raise $14,000,000 for the cause. Through his stake in Oolite Industries, Inc., he donated concrete and concrete block for the construction of buildings at the Law School of the University of Miami, St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church and other local structures. He passed away peacefully July 10, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Regina "Mike" Taylor, and is survived by his present wife, Ernestina Frade Taylor, his daughter Candice Taylor Cosmides (husband James C. Cosmides, M.D.), his son Henry "Hamilton" Taylor III, and his four grandchildren Regina Cosmides, Christopher Cosmides, Nathalie Cosmides, and Victoria Taylor. Services will be held in his honor on Friday, July 15, 2011 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church at 1121 Andalusia Ave., Coral Gables, FL at 11am. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, or your church or charity of choice. VAN ORSDEL CORAL GABLES. View this Guest Book at www. One of the privileges of my life was practicing law with Henry H. Taylor, Jr. for over three decades. We began our professional relationship when Henry invited me to join him at the Hall Building in Miami.

Henry was a very intelligent lawyer and astute advocate for his clients. I have fond memories of our tradition at day's end of discussing legal matters. Henry often shared a wise perspective in resolving our clients' problems.

I admired Henry for his service to our country, his professional ability, his generosity, kindness, and friendship. He was a consummate family man.

My deepest condolences are extended to Tina, Candy, and family.

Henry was an outstanding attorney, and a wonderful gentleman. I came to know Henry when he was corporate counsel for Calder Race Course and I had the privilege of representing Calder as defense counsel for personal injury claims. We had a professional association lasting over 20 years. I admired and respected Henry's advice, practice, and character. Those who knew him in the community will miss him.

I just returned home from a trip last evening, and am sorry to have learned of Henry's funeral this afternoon. My wife and I extend our deepest sympathy and regrets to the family,

My sincere condolences to the Taylor Family. I was one of the privileged ones to have known and worked with Henry through my tenure with the American Cancer Society. He was a true gentleman and this community will miss him. I know we were all blessed that Henry had such a long and healthy life but it seems it is never the right time.

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Taylor's family. I was very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with Mr. Taylor. It was my first job after I graduated from college and he sure taught me a lot about life. He was an impressive figure and so admirable. He treated everyone with respect and kindness. His firm was such a wonderful place to work and a great place to start a career. For me, he set the bar high for the lawyers I have subsequently worked with. I have often remembered him through the years and the lessons I gleaned from him. He was an exceptional, exemplary character and he had a profound impact on my life.

Debbie and I wish to convey our deepest sympathy to Henry's family. Henry was an extraordinary gentlemen to all he met. His acumen as an attorney exceeded his practice years. His zest for life was abundant as was his fun on the golf course. I will always remember his gentle smile. It was as if life and Henry had a mutual compact with one another. Almost like a secret with one another. Henry was rewarded with a longevity of life and health rarely seen. Our prayers are offered particularly for Candy, Jim and their beautiful children for whom Henry had a special place in his heart. Special people make a special difference in our hearts and lives. Henry was such a special person. Henry will never fade from our hearts nor from our memories. May God's richest blessings of comfort and peace touch your hearts and uplift your spirits at this time of sorrow. Your friends share this loss with you and we are here for all of you. Our prayers are with you. "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted."
