Janet Barkas Obituary

BARKAS, JANET On December 23, 2015, Janet Barkas fell asleep in the Lord after 94+ years. She had a great, full life and is at peace after struggling recently. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Hal Barkas, and her eldest son, Harold Peter Barkas, Jr. She is survived by her son, Jay and son, Chris and his wife, Patty and her wonderful grandchildren, Allison and CJ. Jan was born May 26, 1921 in NY. Jan was raised in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. She attended Jamaica HS and was a member of the swim team. Jan joined the U.S. Army Cadet Nursing Corp and finished her RN training just as the war was ending. She and three other young ladies decided to travel to Miami for fun but Jan never left Miami. Working as an RN in the ER (the Alamo) at Jackson Memorial, she met her future husband, Hal. She worked with the legendary Silas Chambers, MD until marriage and babies ended her nursing career. Janet was a devoted wife, mother and friend to all. She enjoyed life every day and often said, "Go while the going is good!" Jan and Hal travelled extensively and loved great times with family and friends. Jan was quite the cook. Her joys were family, friends, food, music, travel and laughter! Jan was an active member of the Coral Reef Yacht Club for about 40 years. She volunteered considerable time to helping others including The Patrons of The Museum of Science. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society. Services: The family will receive friends Monday, January 4, 2016, from 7-9 P.M. at Stanfill Funeral Home (10545 S. Dixie Hwy). Her funeral service will be January 5, 2015, at 10 A.M. at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 7901 N. Kendall Dr., followed by a graveside service. Following that, there will be a gathering at CRYC.

Jan was one of the 'Madam President's of Champagne Guild for many years, and we enjoyed her funny stories and great wit. Even as she grew frail, she was right on top of her game, making us laugh. We will miss her very much, rest in peace.

I am really sorry that the family has to face these difficult circumstances. I have also lost a loved one in death. So I understand what they are going through. God knows our feelings as well. When we are "broken at heart" or "crushed in spirit" he draws near to us Psalm 31:7 He sustains us by providing comfort and encouragement, especially in moments like these. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss.
Sincerely,
GM
