JOAN GAFFNEY Obituary

MEISEL- GAFFNEY, JOAN, of Miami Beach, who was born on Christmas Day, lost her extraordinarily valiant battle against breast cancer on January 22, 2010. Beloved wife of Charley Gaffney, sister of Stephanie Montaigne, aunt of Liz Montaigne (Scott Saperstein), daughter of the late Harold and Frances Meisel, niece of Sid, cousin of Heather and Bill Shulman and mom to 3 cats, Joanie was a devoted Miami Dade public school teacher for 26 years. Ms. Meisel-Gaffney taught at Melrose Elementary in Allapattah for all of her career. She created a homelike environment in her classes that helped her students relax and enjoy the pleasures of learning. Joan loved all the simple pleasures in life, especially her arts and crafts; She was an artist in every sense of the word and created paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and quilts. Joan enjoyed sharing each day with many wonderful friends and the love of her life, Charley. Vacations in the Great Smoky Mountains were among her favorite things. Our hearts will be forever broken from the loss of our beloved Joanie. She adored animals and was an advocate for them, donating to many organizations, which protect them. In keeping with her wishes, no funeral will be held, but the family will advise of plans for the celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to: Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet 16101 W. Dixie Hwy, North Miami Beach, FL 33160 (Please make checks payable to the Humane Society of Greater Miami/Adopt-A-Pet) View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.

Joan, you were a very influential part of who I am today. Even though you are not here physically, you are definitely present spiritually. I feel your energy everywhere. You will never die because you are in the hearts of so many, including myself. It's comforting to know that another angel is taking care of me. We will be together again. I love you.

I only met you 1 time, but I feel close to you through Stephanie at North Beach Elementary. She always refered to you with loving words, "My sister Joannie" I send my condolences to you and your family, with a special hug to Stephanie. With Love.

Dear Mr. Gaffney,
You were so instrumental in developing a love of art in my son, Cameron Wilson. Your teaching and encouragement made art come alive and he won the law school art show with his painting.
We are so deeply sorry to hear of your loss of your wife. May God comfort you now and in the days to come.

It was truly an honor and a priviledge to have had Ms. Meisel-Gaffney as my teacher during my early years at Melrose, and later, as a true lifetime friend. Later in life, I enjoyed maintaining contact with Joan and Charlie and identified Joan as a 2nd mom. She was truly a remarkable teacher, a creative and loving spirit, and an advocate for all living things. I will never forget her teachings, in particular, a poem which always helped in remembering the exact order of our planets within the solar system. Joan, I will forever remember this, and know that you are now somewhere in the heavens, re-assuring us all who deeply love and miss you, that yes, your spirit will continue to live on not only within our hearts but somewhere amongst the very planets that occupy our system and heavens above. My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie, and remaining family members.

My thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Joan's family. We had lost touch over the years, but I knew and remember her as a gentle, peaceful warrior.

Only when you drink from the river of silence, shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountaintop, you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
Charlie, her grace is with you forever.
Blessings, Judie Valette

We'll always remember Joan when we look at the plaque she made that graces our waiting room wall, giving clients a chuckle. That, and of course the 7-layer bars that she baked every Christmas. No one else's will ever be as delicious as those she lovingly brought us year after year.

We salute this lovely and brave lady and her loving and steadfast husband. Joan's wonderful spirit will live on with all who remember her.
