Maria Luisa Mininson

1931 - 2017

MININSON, MARIA LUISA 86, passed away at South Miami Hospital on Sunday, September 3, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born in Tampa, Florida on May 10, 1931. Maria was predeceased by her loving husband and soul mate of 42 years, Melvin "Mel" Mendi Mininson. They were married on July 12, 1959 in Miami, Florida. Also surviving is her daughter, Loretta Annabelle Etheridge and husband, Mark of Miami, Florida and grandson she adored William A. Whitehead. Maria attended University of Florida. She and her husband made news nationally when they won a contest to stay enclosed in a bomb shelter for one month directly after they were married. Maria dedicated herself to the Department of Health and Human Services, Cuban Refugee Division for over 30 years obtaining the position of Assistant to the Director. Maria was recognized throughout her career for outstanding achievements and service to others. Maria and Mel settled into their home in South Miami in 1972 as one of the original owners in the neighborhood. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Maria enjoyed lifelong friendships with many that she loved dearly. She was a member of Saint Thomas Catholic Church and often could be found watching services or a mass on television. Maria had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her 2 cocker spaniels, Princessa and Luna. She loved her grandson William very much and enthusiastically attended his cross country meets and lacrosse matches. Mel and Maria traveled together to South America many times and extensively across the U.S. and Canada. Most of all, they simply enjoyed being together. The family will hold a viewing and celebration of life service at Memorial Plan Funeral Home 9800 SW 24 Street Miami, FL Saturday, September 30, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. with the burial to follow at 3:00 p.m. at Flagler Memorial Park 5301 West Flagler Street Miami, FL.
